UiTM At The Forefront in Green Initiative

In 2022, at UiTM’s Tun Abdul Razak library and broadcasted on UiTM’s YouTube channel, two panelists discussed “Global Goals: UiTM at the Forefront in Green Initiative.” The first panelist highlighted the role of the Office of Infrastructure & Infostructure Development (PPII) in creating a sustainable, green campus ecosystem. PPII introduced six initiatives, such as Campus Visibility and Sustainability, to improve infrastructure, beautify the campus, and manage energy, water, and waste. Notably, UiTM saved 10% on electricity costs through initiatives like the UiTM Solar Farm Project and Renewable Energy Photovoltaic Project, reducing carbon emissions by 74,000 tonnes annually. However, achieving these goals depends on raising awareness and support across the UiTM community. The second panelist described their role in promoting sustainability at the university and global levels. UiTM’s initiatives resulted in high rankings in sustainability, such as 9th place in the UI Green Metric World University Rankings 2021 and multiple Diamond Awards in the Low Carbon City Challenge 2030 (LCC 2030 Challenge). To create a sustainable culture, it is essential to foster awareness and collaboration within the UiTM community, emphasizing the need for “net zero carbon emissions’’ and sustainability.

“Empowering Through Education: The UiTM Street Law Initiative in Malaysia”

This paper explores the creation of the UiTM Street Law project and the launch of the UiTM Street Law Portal in Malaysia, with a focus on educating the public about law and government through interactive teaching methods. Inspired by global Street Law movements, this initiative aims to address the gap in legal education within Malaysian law schools. Unlike community legal services in Malaysia, the UiTM Street Law project offers comprehensive online resources and pro-bono education, targeting marginalized groups. The portal provides access to fundamental law subjects, such as contract law and constitutional law, along with interactive features for communication and scheduling pro-bono legal teachings. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, the UiTM Street Law project aims to reduce inequality, promote peace, strengthen institutions, and empower marginalized communities for a more equitable society and an enhanced justice system.

Using Academic Pursuits to Promote Sustainability

Prof Dr Corina Joseph from Accounting Faculty has been deeply committed to sustainability since completing her PhD. Her doctoral research, titled ‘Sustainability Reporting on Malaysian Local Authority Websites,’ delved into the extent of sustainability information disclosure and the factors shaping such disclosures. The study approached this issue through the lens of institutional theory, particularly examining isomorphism.

Translate General Policies into Reasonable & Adaptable Actions

Professor Dr Yarina Ahmad, an expert in policy development and policy paper consolidation from the Faculty of Administrative Science & Policy Studies at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), talked about various aspects of policy development. The conversation covered the role of students and staff in policy development and how they can contribute to creating relevant and up-todate policies. Additionally, the discussion touched on UiTM’s involvement with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) during the COVID-19 pandemic and a research project with the Institute of Public Security of Malaysia (IPSOM) related to border security, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals 16 and 17. The importance of well-crafted policies in organisations and leadership decisions was emphasized, and the hope was expressed for better understanding of research and policy work among UiTM staff, lecturers, and students.

Challenges and Potential it Solutions in Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Related to Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions in the Context of Malaysia

Without justice, strong institutions and peace - we have no hankered for sustainable development. The world nowadays is increasingly divisive. Some countries have continuous levels of harmony, assurance, and opulence, while others plunge into an eternal series of friction and ferity. This is inevitable and need to deal with. The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) have embraced technological advancement and worldwide communication as important forces in driving human growth, reducing digital divides, and strengthening information societies. The use of digital can motivate us to achieve the Goal of Sustainable Development. Globally, technology is increasingly being used in efforts to fight corruption, not only to focus on bribery, illegality, money laundering, fraud, and racism, but also to promote transparency, accountability, integrity, openness, participation and inclusion. This is particularly clear in the new corruption, surveillance, representation and government programs, including open contracts and electronic purchases. A clear understanding of how modern technologies are needed to keep peace, justice and a strong institution over the next decade is needed. Based on desk research, the study investigated the following emerging technologies relevant to integrity, trust, and anti-corruption: Artificial intelligence, learning tools, and in-depth learning tools; blockchain technology; big data statistics; robotic process automation. The Internet of Things; and cloud computing. The study looked to find the challenges posed by the SDGs to build and keep peace, justice and a strong institution. The discussion in each chapter also deals with the technological solutions provided by IT on how they relate to the Malaysian context.

Creating a Plan to Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions from the Malaysian Road Transportation Industry

The demand for transport services is expected to rise, causing the CO2 emissions level to increase as well. In Malaysia, the transportation sector accounts for 28% of total CO2 emissions, of which 85% comes from road transport. By 2020, Malaysia is targeting a reduction in CO2 emissions intensity by up to 40% and in this effort the role of road transport is paramount. This paper attempts to investigate effective policy options that can assist Malaysia in reducing the CO2 emissions level. An Optimisation model is developed to estimate the potential CO2 emissions mitigation strategies for road transport by minimising the CO2 emissions under the constraint of fuel cost and demand travel. Several mitigation strategies have been applied to analyse the effect of CO2 emissions reduction potential. The results demonstrate that removal of fuel price subsidies can result in reductions of up to 652 ktonnes of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can be decreased by 6.55%, which would enable Malaysia to hit its target by 2020. CO2 emissions can be reduced significantly, up to 20%, by employing a combination of mitigation policies in Malaysia. This suggests that appropriate mitigation policies can assist the country in its quest to achieve the CO2 emissions reduction target.

Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) uses Zakat to Implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The obligation of zakat is not only on individuals but also on business entities. Business entities are seen to provide higher and enormous business zakat payment prospects compared to individuals in line with the main purpose of establishing business entities is to generate profits. Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) is the largest capital and investment management company in Malaysia which also performs its business zakat obligation. Recently, the United Nations (UN) has outlined the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) covering social, economic, and environmental elements. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyse the relationship between the implementation of the SDGs through zakat issued by PNB. This qualitative study was conducted using data collection and data analysis methods. Data collection methods are done through library research. The data obtained were analysed based on inductive, deductive, and comparative methods to obtain the results of the study. The results of this study found out that PNB implements wakalah zakat in performing their business zakat obligation. PNB also achieved their SDGs agenda through the zakat payment activity.

The 3G SDGs Championship: UiTM Received World Recognition

The Global Good Governance 3G Awards 2022, held in Dubai, recognized Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) with the 3G SDGs Championship for its contribution to facilitating digitization in delivering quality education globally. The event, which took place on May 18, 2022, at the Conrad Hotel, Dubai, celebrated excellence in good governance and commitment to social welfare in three major streams: Government & Politics, Corporate Sector, and Social Sector & Philanthropy. UiTM’s achievement marks another significant international acknowledgment of its mission, established in 1956, to provide quality education and uplift underserved communities in Malaysia. UiTM is the only Malaysian university among the 51 winners, showcasing its strengths in governance, sustainable practices, and extensive academic offerings. Positioned to become a globally renowned university by 2025, UiTM is focused on talent development, adopting a 3R strategy (Reset, Recover, Restore) in response to the post-pandemic landscape, guided by the SDGs and the 10-10 MySTIE Framework. A panel discussion at the event touched on topics related to technology, digital innovation, good governance, SDGs, sustainable philanthropy, capacity building, and women’s empowerment. Additionally, UiTM expressed its commitment to annually report on the progress towards the global goals to guide its transformative efforts.

Designing the Future Direction of Blue Tourism in a way that Promotes Sustainability in Coastal Tourism Destinations

Coastal tourism, a booming sector in the broader tourism industry, presents unique challenges necessitating a departure from one-size-fits-all developmental approaches. Despite its rapid growth, governments often prioritize economic gains over resource sustainability, resulting in adverse environmental and community impacts. Traditional tourism models neglect ecosystem preservation, community involvement, and governance, leading to evident environmental deterioration in coastal destinations. To ensure sustainable development in island tourism, active stakeholder involvement and comprehensive policies are crucial, although the myriad terms related to destination sustainability lack clear definitions. Uncontrolled coastal development further exacerbates ecological risks. The emerging concept of the Blue Economy, advocating for sustainable marine resource use, aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals but faces adoption challenges due to insufficient stakeholder communication and limited industry-academia-community engagement, hindering the realization of SDG aspirations. This paper highlights the need for a reevaluation of coastal tourism developmental strategies to align with global sustainability objectives.

How young people in ASEAN Countries can be Involved in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires commitment from the United Nations (UN) members to meet the 17 goals. Therefore, the goals should be implemented at the national level, sub-national level, and also at the local level through a variety of national planning and policies. However, the SDGs progression needs to be monitored by the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and various UN Agencies to remain relevant as a global agenda. This paper attempts to analyse the initiatives of youth-centric SDGs among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries. The primary reference in analysing the SDGs implementation and youth engagement process is the Voluntary National Review (VNR), National Development Plans (NDP), and the UN official reports. Evidence has shown that ASEAN countries have engaged with the youth in implementing SDGs, and have focused on youth, indicating the importance of the younger generation as one of the Major Groups and Stakeholders (MGoS) in accomplishing the national SDGs initiative. Nonetheless, more relevant and meaningful SDGs engagement is needed as the youth represents the present and future generation that is affected by sustainability issues. Hence, ASEAN countries should empower their younger generation by implementing more youth-SDGs-related programmes to fulfil each SDGs.

Development of a Public Sector Data Framework for Enhancing Open Government Data Implementation in Malaysia

Role and Authority of the University Board of Directors at UiTM

The Governance Division and University Secretariat, Registrar’s Office, oversee the management of the Board of Directors and provide secretarial support to the University Board of Directors (LPU) and its subcommittees. The LPU serves as the highest governing body for Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), empowered to make critical decisions, set policies, and define strategic directions to align with the national higher education agenda.

Fostering Organisational Identity Through Values and Ethics at UiTM

Values and work ethics are important components in an organisation that help to shape the quality personality and identity of its citizens. The success and achievement of an organisation are not solely dependent on the renewal of work systems and technology; rather, they are inextricably linked to the values and behaviour of its citizens. Values and Ethics Code serves as a basic guide for all UiTM citizens to carry out their respective responsibilities with full integrity based on the UiTM Values of Excellence, Synergy, and Integrity (ESI). Values and Ethics Code also addresses issues such as conduct and work ethics, as well as guidance on citizen behaviour, with the goal of creating a harmonious work environment and a service delivery system.
