UiTM Ranked in the 2023 QS World University Rankings: Sustainability

SHAH ALAM, 26TH OCTOBER 2022 – Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia makes its mark on sustainability once again as it finds itself ranked in the first edition of the QS World University Rankings on Sustainability 2023.

The ranking measures an institution’s Environmental Impact and Social Impact, each with its own indicators that reflect the institution’s commitment towards sustainable development. In the first edition of this ranking, institutions are ranked separately for Environmental Impact and Social Impact, and the combination of both contributes to the overall ranking for sustainability. UiTM is proud to have been placed in 361-380 for overall ranking among 700 ranked institutions worldwide, and 4th among 9 ranked universities in Malaysia.

UiTM’s strongest performance was in Environmental Impact as it attained a global position of 330 and performed the best for the lens on Sustainable Institutions at 161 globally. This particular lens measures, among others, an institution’s operations and commitment to sustainability, existing policies on sustainability, the impact of the alumni on the environment, membership in organisations and groups devoted to sustainable development, student societies related to environment and sustainable development, and recording and reporting of the university’s energy, emissions, and water usage.

For its performance in the Social Impact category, UiTM attained the global position of 414 and performed the best for the Employment and Opportunities lens at 294 globally. This lens examines the institution’s employer reputation, research aligned with SDGs, graduate employment rate, and the level of preparedness of the institution’s graduates to venture into their desired careers upon graduation.

For a first edition report on sustainability, it is an achievement for an institution to be ranked globally. The entry criteria set by QS for this first edition were to have a published strategy on the university’s commitment to climate or the environment, eligibility for the QS World University Ranking, as well as meeting a minimum threshold of published papers that are aligned with the SDGs topics, all of which have been met by UiTM.

Professor Datuk Ts. Dr Hajah Roziah Mohd Janor, the Vice-Chancellor of UiTM, remarked, “When we introduced UiTM’s 2025 Strategic Plan to become a Globally Renowned University, one of the benchmarks we set is to achieve a Globally Marketable status by 2023. It is clear that we are well on our way to achieving that benchmark with this recognition from QS on our environmental and social impact, as reflected in our outstanding sustainability standards.”

“My heartiest congratulations to the other institutions in Malaysia that are ranked in this first edition of the 2023 QS World University Rankings on Sustainability,” she added. “I would also like to publicly acknowledge the efforts of UiTM staff, students, alumni, and collaborators. As a comprehensive university, we are constantly looking beyond education and learning to find opportunities to make a bigger impact on the world at large.”
