Malaysian Ambassador’s Support Will Improve UiTM’s Reputation In Türkiye

A courtesy call meeting was arranged between the UiTM Vice Chancellor and the Malaysian Ambassador to Türkiye, His Excellency Sazali Mustafa Kamal. In this meeting, the discussion focused on the programmes to be organised by the Association of Statutory Bodies of Malaysia (PBBM), and projects being worked on by the Accounting Research Institute (ARI), Arshad Ayub Graduate Business School (AAGBS), and UiTM Penang. It was mentioned that potential collaboration in academic and research will be looked at, focusing on the fields of Islamic Finance, Digital Technology, and Languages. It is hoped that the relationship between UiTM and the embassy would provide mutual benefits, particularly when there are needs for UiTM to travel abroad for academic visits, research projects, and industrial partnerships, in an effort to make UiTM a globally renowned university.

Dual-Degree In Mathematical Studies

On May 19, 2022, a delegation from UiTM met with officials from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). The discussions centred on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in areas such as student mobility, joint teaching and learning activities, research and publications, and the possibility of offering dual degrees in Mathematical Studies. Academic appointments from both parties were also considered during the meeting.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Apprenticeship Programme was signed between UiTM and McDonald’s Malaysia. The event included a creative activity involving student volunteers and orphans, where they engaged in a batik workshop. Dato ‘Azmir Jaafar, the Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald’s Malaysia, even purchased the best batik work, which was then donated to an orphanage. The collaboration between UiTM and McDonald’s Malaysia aims to offer career opportunities to a diverse range of students, including those from underprivileged backgrounds and individuals with special needs. The goal is to involve 4,000 students from 35 campuses, aligning with UiTM’s mission to enhance graduate employability. McDonald’s has committed to creating 50,000 new jobs by 2026 and investing RM300 million in training and development programs.

UiTM and Universitas Jayabaya Indonesia Renew Academic, Cultural and Scientific Collaboration, and Staff Exchange

On November 26 2021, the College of Engineering, UiTM renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universitas Jayabaya, Indonesia, for three years. This ceremony was part of a larger MoU/MoA ceremony involving UiTM, the Ministry of Transportation Indonesia, Universitas Bakrie, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Universitas Jember, and Universitas Jayabaya, Indonesia. The UiTM Vice Chancellor highlighted that the threeyear renewal MoU strengthens cooperation between the two institutions, building on the success of previous collaborations such as the 2019 Summer School and the 2021 virtual student colloquium. These activities facilitated cultural and academic exchanges between students and the sharing of research through online webinars. UiTM and Universitas Jayabaya have committed to extending their MoU due to their active involvement. Future plans include organising symposia, conferences, short courses, student exchanges, and faculty/staff institutional exchanges. Academy of Language Studies, UiTM Kedah Formed a partnership With K. J. Somaiyya College of Arts

The Academy of Language Studies (APB) of UiTM Kedah Branch plays a crucial role in UiTM’s quest to become a Globally Renowned University (GRU) 2025 by maintaining international partnerships. A recent initiative called the “Window to the Borderless World: Intercultural Communication via International Collaboration Project/Student Mentoring Programme,” was concluded with a ceremony on January 25, 2022. This program involved 363 students from both institutions and 20+ lecturers and facilitators.

This unique online intercultural program aimed to teach students the importance of intercultural communication. Ms Syazliyati Ibrahim from APB, UiTM Kedah led this project while Dr Ravindra Jadhav of K.J. Somaiya College coordinated the project on the Indian side. Ten lecturers from APB, UiTM Kedah, and K. J. Somaiya College actively facilitated Google Meet sessions alongside the main committee.

In the closing ceremony, Professor Dr Haji Mohamad Abdullah bin Haji Hemdi, Rector of UiTM Kedah Branch, highlighted the project’s success in fostering intercultural understanding and bringing different cultures together. Adjunct Professors for Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and City University College of Ajman (CUCA)

A visit to the City University College of Ajman (CUCA) included a warm welcome from CUCA’s President, Mr Imran Khan. During the visit, Ms Salma Senaran (CUCA Director of Student Recruitment) showcased CUCA’s modern facilities including the Dentistry Simulation Laboratory, TV Studio, Physiology and Anatomy Laboratory, and Media Laboratory. This visit was a follow-up to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during the Dubai Expo 2020 in December 2021 between UiTM and CUCA. In addition to academic collaboration, research, and professional certification, both institutions agreed to appoint adjunct professors to enhance scholarly interactions between both universities.

UiTM and Al-Ain University Lecturers Became Research Partners”

A UiTM delegation led by Dr Faycal Farhi, Associate Professor from the College of Communication & Media, paid a courtesy visit to Professor Dr Ghaleb A. El-Refae, President of Al-Ain University. The delegation engaged with key faculty members from Al-Ain University, including Dr Qutaibah Anwar Althebyan, Dean of the College of Engineering, and Professor Dr Zafar Husain, Dean of the College of Business. The visit focused on enhancing cooperation in mobility, research, and publications, with a particular emphasis on Islamic finance. Collaborative research initiatives such as those involving Dr Mosab Tabash and Dr Roslina Mohamad Shafi, along with other colleagues from UiTM, are underway and the institutions are preparing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future.

Joint-Supervision and Joint-Publication Between UiTM and Zayed University

A delegation from UiTM to Zayed University represented by Professor Dr Haryani Haron, (Dean of Faculty of Computer Science & Mathematics), Associate Professor Dr Amirul Afif Muhamat (Deputy Dean of Research & Innovation, Faculty of Business and Management), and Dr Hayati Abd Rahman (Director of the Strategic Communications Division in the Communications Department) engaged with Zayed University representatives, Professor Dr Syed Malek Fakar Duane (from Information Studies and Management Technology) and Dr Munir Majdalawieh (Chairman of the Department of Information Studies and Management Technology). The discussion between both parties resulted in agreements for joint supervision of student research and collaborative publications, marking a productive collaboration between both institutions.

UiTM’s Annapurna Base Camp Expedition 2022

In collaboration with the Alumni Universities of Texas Association (PAUT), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) successfully organised an expedition to Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal in March 2022. The expedition, initially scheduled earlier but delayed due to COVID-19, was officially launched on December 3, 2021, with the presence of YB Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, Minister of Higher Education, Professor Datuk Ts Dr Roziah Mohd Janor, Vice-Chancellor of UiTM, and Tan Sri Dato’ Ir Hj Zaini Omar, Chairman of Mohhashi Space Gateway Bhd.

The expedition consisted of 16 participants, including students and lecturers from the Centre of Studies for Construction (Faculty of Architecture, Planning, and Surveying, UiTM), alumni from PAUT and Built Environment Organisation (PAAB), as well as training coaches, medical doctors, and a cameraman. Four UiTM faculties, namely the Faculty of Architecture, Planning, and Surveying, the Faculty of Sports Science and Recreation, the Faculty of Business and Management, and the Faculty of Medicine, provided expertise and support in terms of physical and mental preparation.

The expedition also involved research and development in the areas of Nepalese cultures and native people, disaster management at high altitudes, and human comfort adaptation along the hiking trails to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) which allowed for valuable data collection. Learning opportunities in mountain architecture, sustainable development, disaster management, and environmental studies were obtained while strengthening teamwork and identity among the climbers.

The expedition’s success was due to the support of government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and faculty collaborations. Such initiatives lay the groundwork for universities to establish meaningful partnerships with government bodies and expand affiliations with NGOs, fostering educational programs, research collaborations, and enhancing overall university visibility.

UiTM Signed Five MoUs with Indonesian Universities and Industry Partners

On February 21, 2022, UiTM signed three Memorandums of Agreement (MoA) and two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with both international and local partners. These agreements aim to foster collaboration in research, knowledge exchange, skill development, and facilitate staff and student mobility.

UiTM established three MoAs with Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel and Universitas Ciputra in Indonesia, as well as Pencak Tari Enterprise in Malaysia. Additionally, two MoUs were signed with Asosiasi Pendidikan Tinggi Informatika dan Komputer (APTIKOM) in Riau, Indonesia, and Kenaf Venture Global Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia.

Associate Professor Ts Dr Shukor Sanim, Rector of UiTM Perlis Branch, emphasised the importance of these partnerships in UiTM’s pursuit of becoming a Globally Renowned University by 2025. He stressed that collaborations with both local and international higher education institutions and industry partners are vital. Such partnerships provide students with practical knowledge and help groom future talents who will contribute to the nation’s economic growth. UiTM Perlis plans to forge more strategic partnerships in the coming year to enhance international and local cooperation in research, teaching and learning, and facilitate staff and student exchanges.

Faculty of Business and Management of UiTM and Middlesex University Dubai Sign an Agreement for Research and Academic Collaboration

On March 17, 2022, the Faculty of Business and Management (FBM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and the Centre for Supply Chain Excellence (CSCE), Middlesex University Dubai (MUD) signed an MoU to formalise their logistics and supply chain management research and academic collaboration. The academic discussion in August 2021 began the relationship between the two institutions, and they signed a virtual MoU to ratify their agreement. At the signing event, FBM Dean, Professor Dr Noryati Ahmad and MUD Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Director, Dr Cedwyn Fernandes represented their institutions.

This MoU aims to strengthen partnerships between both institutions to promote logistics and supply chain management academic and research collaborations. In her welcoming speech, Professor Dr Noryati said that these partnerships will increase high-impact research output in both institutions, which will help to improve QS ranking. She added that new exchange programmes for staff and students will help to elevate academic experience.

Meanwhile, Dr Cedwyn highlighted recent MUD-UiTM collaborations, including distinguished guest speaker series, collaborative panellist sessions, conference presentations, book writing projects, and logistics and supply chain research. The new relationships between UiTM and MUD are expected to lead to more fruitful collaborations that benefit universities, students, and society.

TIME dotCom Delegation Shares Efficient and Secure Modern Digital Technology

A delegation representing TIME dotCom, a prominent company in the digital economy and modern digital technology ecosystem, together with their strategic partner Infosys, visited UiTM to discuss future collaborations.

A discussion was held with the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development) and Assistant Vice Chancellor (Infostructure) of UiTM, who listened to the visiting team’s presentation on “Exploring Transformation via Platform as a Service.”

The initiatives and solutions presented by TIME dotCom, which are aimed at propelling organisations in Malaysia into the digital economy with an efficient and secure modern digital technology ecosystem, were compelling as the delegation’s insights and potential collaboration could empower Bumiputera’s education at UiTM.

Transforming International Science Education: The Sakura Science Exchange Program

In 2019, Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT), Japan and UiTM were awarded the Sakura Science Exchange Program in Science and Technology, funded by the Japan Science and Technology (JST) Agency. Initially planned for March 2020, the program was cancelled due to COVID-19. It was replaced by an online program called International Training – Introduction to Embedded Programming (EIP), involving participants from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Taiwan.

The EIP program, held from February 28 to March 5, 2022, aimed at fostering exchange of ideas in science and technology, strengthening international relations, and promoting global engagement of Japanese educational institutions. It involved 86 participants from SIT Japan, UiTM Malaysia, I-Shou University (ISU) Taiwan, and Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Indonesia. The program, hosted on Zoom, focused on embedded programming and control system design, covering C language basics, Arduino, and group projects. This program fosters students’ interest in these fields and enhances educational collaboration between Japan and Malaysia.

During a visit to Dubai for the Global Good Governance 3G Awards 2022, some courtesy calls were made to several UAE universities. Exploring Diplomacy, Security, and ASEAN Cooperation: Insights from UiTM’s MIRAD Webinar

Students from UiTM’s Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies, specialising in the Master of International Relation and Diplomacy (MIRAD) program, organised a webinar focusing on diplomacy, security, and cooperation in ASEAN. The event featured two distinguished speakers: Ms Wan Wardina Wan Abdul Wahab from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and Professor Dr Shankari Sundararaman from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India.

This dialogue session aimed to provide a platform for MIRAD postgraduate students to engage in discussions and gain insights into contemporary Southeast Asian issues. The first seminar, held on June 7, 2021, centred on the ‘Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement’ and featured Ms Wan Wardina Wan Abdul Wahab. The webinar explored how the RCEP could benefit ASEAN Regional Integration, delving into ASEAN’s structure, its role in international integration, and the associated challenges.

Furthermore, Prof Dr Shankari Sundararaman provided valuable insights into ASEAN-INDIA relations during the event. The discussion revolved around India’s “Act East Policy” and its efforts to enhance interactions with East Asian countries. The ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (AIFTA) was highlighted as an initial step in strengthening ties between the two parties. Prof Dr Shankari also discussed India’s decision to exit the RCEP, emphasising its aim to bolster bilateral connections with ASEAN countries and increase its influence in the region to counterbalance the impact of the Asia Pacific.

i-InTeLEC 2021: Strengthening Academic Collaboration In Language Education

The Academy of Language Studies at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Kedah Branch partnered with the Language Centre at the University Brunei Darussalam for the International Innovation in Teaching and Learning & Language Education Conference (i-InTeLEC 2021). This event, held on 9 & 10 November 2021, aimed to promote academic collaboration and innovation, featuring an innovation competition, a conference, a research workshop on high-impact journal publishing, and a digital content competition for students.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, i-InTeLEC 2021 successfully brought together over 150 participants through Google Meet and APB Kedah FB Live. Keynote speaker Associate Professor Dr Andrew Littlejohn from UBD and other experts discussed the future of teaching in the digital age. The event received more than 127 submissions across its programs.

This collaboration between UiTM and UBD demonstrates that international cooperation remains feasible during travel restrictions, with both universities committed to fostering further academic activities for the benefit of students and lecturers.

UiTM Malaysia and Tokyo University of Agriculture (Tokyo NODAI) signed an MoU on December 6, 2021, to expand their international collaboration. The partnership aims to share knowledge, technological advancements, and resources, with a focus on integrated and smart solutions for sustainable development goals (SDGs). The collaboration seeks to enhance research, education, culture, digitalization, energy resilience, women’s empowerment, and infrastructure development.

The Rector of UiTM Pahang Branch expressed gratitude for this commitment, highlighting its positive impact on a knowledge-based economy, employment rates, innovation, and global recognition. Tokyo NODAI also sees benefits in research, innovation, academics, and cultural exchanges.

UiTM expanded its international collaboration by signing an MoU with Hasan Kalyoncu University (HKU), Turkey, on March 4, 2022. The agreement aims to enhance teaching, research, and engagement missions through faculty and student exchanges, collaborative research, and various programs.

UiTM Signs MoU with University of Ottawa to Strengthen Global Recognition

UiTM and the University of Ottawa, Canada, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen UiTM’s global recognition. The MoU was signed by President Jacques Fremont of the University of Ottawa and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Ts. Dr Hjh. Roziah Mohd Janor of UiTM, witnessed by Datin Paduka Anizan Siti Hajjar Adnin, the Malaysian High Commissioner to Canada.

This collaboration, initiated by UiTM Negeri Sembilan and supported by Rector Prof. Dr Yamin Yasin, began with a Letter of Intent signed in May 2022 in UiTM, Malaysia. The partnership involves teaching collaborations, research in Engineering, alumni and community engagement, international competitions, and trainee placements. The delegation also discussed potential collaborations with George Brown College and the University of Carleton.

FSG UiTM’s Internationalisation Journey Towards GRU2025

Faculty of Applied Sciences (FSG) at UiTM is committed to achieving its goal of becoming a Globally Renowned University by 2025 through strategic partnerships and internationalisation efforts. The faculty recognises the changing landscape due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has adapted by promoting virtual-based internationalisation activities. This includes virtual student exchange programmes, conferences, summer programmes, and lecture series, allowing students to gain international experiences from home.

In 2021, FSG achieved significant success in international mobility, hosting 45 inbound and sending 174 outbound students to various countries. Virtual mobility among staff members also increased through webinars, joint research, and collaborative events like EnvChem2021 and InSoFoST2021. FSG has established partnerships with 22 international universities and 4 international industries.

To enhance research and funding, FSG encourages international joint publications, grant applications, and research collaborations. The faculty’s efforts have led to a notable increase in Scopus indexed publications and internationally funded grants. FSG’s Chemistry subject has been recognised in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, contributing to UiTM’s recognition as a top institution in Malaysia.

UiTM Negeri Sembilan Celebrates Success In Securing 15 MoUs And MoAs With International And National Partners

UiTM Negeri Sembilan celebrated its success in securing 15 Memorandums of Understanding and Agreements (MoU/MoA) with various institutions and industries in 2021 through a virtual appreciation ceremony on September 9, 2022. These agreements, consisting of 10 international and 5 national partnerships, aim to elevate teaching and learning quality, produce globally recognised graduates, foster research and innovation, stimulate consultation and commercialization, encourage student mobility, and advance various fields.

International partners include Yamanashi Gakuin University, Global University Lebanon, and several Indonesian and Iranian universities, while national collaborators include Multimedia University Malaysia (MMU), the National Audit Department, and industry players such as Genting Malaysia Berhad and Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre Berhad (MaGIC).

Activities conducted with these partners include big data analytics courses, consultations, joint conferences and research activities, student mobility programmes, food product development competitions, collaborative teaching, supervision, joint examinations, and more.

UiTM Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Ts. Dr Hajah Roziah Mohd Janor, expressed hope that these agreements would enhance mobility programmes, industrial training, and academic visits, ultimately contributing to UiTM’s goal of becoming a Globally Renowned University (GRU) by 2025.
