UiTM Welcomes 22 New Partners from the World’s Leading Hotels

A significant event took place at the Westin Kuala Lumpur as UiTM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Marriott International (Malaysia), involving 22 strategic hotel partners. These partners encompass a range of hotels, including Aloft, Courtyard, Four Points, Le Meridien, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and Westin properties. This collaboration aims to bolster future talent in the hospitality and tourism industry by providing UiTM students with opportunities for practical training, parttime employment, and management trainee roles through the MUSE program. Additionally, the MAPE program is set to enhance staff competencies through Training of Trainers methods and industry-related training. The Faculty of Hotel & Tourism Management played a pivotal role in the success of the initiative, and the partnership is expected to increase the employability of UiTM graduates and enhance the university’s global reputation.

Students of Art and Design have been Chosen for the Unicorn Scholar Programme at UiTM

Two students from UiTM’s Faculty of Art & Design, Abdul Hafy Shah bin Abd Halim Shah from the Printing Technology Department and Siti Nur Nadia from the Textile Design Department, have been selected as finalists for the Unicorn Scholar Programme (USP). This prestigious program, a collaboration between UiTM, the Malaysian Academy of SME and Entrepreneurship Development (MASMED), the Ministry of Higher Education, and UiTM Business Network Alumni (ALUMNI BIZNET), provides a platform for students to showcase their entrepreneurial talents in a real-world business setting. Abdul Hafy Shah is the founder of AHS Ideas, a startup specializing in robotics classes. His company leverages robotic and augmented reality technologies to develop innovative classroom materials. CIMA Global University and Academic Excellence Awards

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has launched the CIMA Global University and Academic Excellence Awards to recognise academicians’ contributions to the success of CIMA students and graduates. CIMA seeks to provide the recipients recognition and reputation among companies and students by promoting the institution as a prime CIMA partner through the CIMA Academic Partner Excellence Awards. The award will increase the institution’s profile within the worldwide accounting profession and provide it with a competitive advantage. CIMA received 400 nominations, and two instructors from the Faculty of Accountancy, UiTM, were nominated as top five finalists. They received two awards each. Associate Professor Dr Tuan Zainun Tuan Mat received the Global Gold award for the CIMA Teaching Excellence Award (influential lecturer) category, as well as the Global Silver awards for the CIMA Campus Culture Excellence awards. This award honours a CIMA topic professor who has shown exceptional engagement with CIMA students and assisted them in improving their understanding of the subject presented. Professor Dr Datin Suzana Sulaiman was named Regional Champion (Asia Pacific) in the area of CIMA Teaching Excellence Award (CIMA Coursework Teaching). She was also awarded the CIMA Research Excellence Awards for Outstanding Contribution in Malaysia. The James Dyson Foundation and Innovation Lab UiTMUTHM, in collaboration with ICAN at UiTM’s College of Engineering, hosted a live sharing and Q&A session on April 13, 2022, introducing The James Dyson Award 2022. This event aimed to inspire students to participate in the competition, which encourages creative engineering ideas. James Dyson Foundation, a UK-based charity, promotes innovation and learning from mistakes. The annual James Dyson Award recognizes inventive talents among university students worldwide, particularly in engineering. The event featured Dyson engineers discussing design principles and the company’s unique approach. The Faculty of Pharmacy at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Rhazes Consultancy Services Sdn. Bhd. collaborated through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of pharmaceutical healthcare. The collaboration, signed on December 24, 2021, at UiTM’s Puncak Alam Campus in Selangor, Malaysia, aims to enhance education and expertise in tele-pharmacy and digital health. The MoU was formally signed by Associate Professor Dr Shariza Sahudin, Dean of UiTM’s Faculty of Pharmacy, and Mr Munaver Ahmad b Nazir Ahmad, the CEO of Rhazes Consultancy Services Sdn. Bhd. Malaysia’s First National Pitching Research Competition is Being Organised by FBM and UiTM

The Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) achieved a milestone by hosting Malaysia’s inaugural National Pitching Research Competition (NPRC). Commencing on November 1, 2021, this competition utilized Professor Robert Faff’s Pitching Research instrument to enable participants to articulate their research concepts at the national level, with the winner advancing to the global arena. The NPRC, a product of collaboration between the InSPiR2eS International Research Network and Professor Robert Faff, garnered an enthusiastic response. Over 40 pitching proposals were submitted by postgraduate research students and early career researchers (ECRs) from various institutions in Malaysia. The competition featured three categories: Early Career Researchers, PhD students, and Master’s students. A panel of academic judges selected the top five pitches from each category to proceed to the final round. During the grand finale held on February 23, 2022, finalists had two minutes to present their research via an online platform. The judging panel consisted of three distinguished academicians.

Winners in each category received cash prizes and e-certificates. Dr Yvonne Ang from FBM’s Puncak Alam campus secured victory in the ECR category, securing a spot in the semi-final stage of the InSPiR2eS Global Pitching Research Competition (IGPRC). Under the leadership of Dr Norliza Che Yahya and the guidance of Professor Dr Noryati Ahmad and Associate Professor Dr Amirul Afif Muhamat, the first NPRC was a resounding success. UiTM’s Faculty of Medicine Advances Evidence-Based Research with Systematic Review

Recognizing the pivotal role of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in evidence-based medicine and research, UiTM’s Faculty of Medicine organized an event titled “Systematic Review: What’s New?” on June 29, 2022. The Biostatistics Consultancy Service (BCS) team collaborated with the Department of Public Health Medicine and the Deputy Dean (Research & Innovation) to host this insightful initiative. The objectives of the event were threefold: to introduce newcomers to systematic reviews, update researchers on recent developments, and enhance the skills of experienced practitioners. The keynote speaker, Professor Dr Philip Baker from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia, shared his expertise in epidemiology and evidence-based practice. During the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Dr Fazah Akhtar Hanapiah, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, highlighted the importance of international collaboration in enriching research and academic connections. The event drew over 100 participants from various institutions, aiming to deepen their understanding of systematic reviews and inspire their application in research. Let’s Science Up Kit

Malaysia’s Education Minister, Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, expressed concern about the declining interest of the younger generation in science and technology (S&T), noting their preference for fields like public relations, business, social media influencing, and digital-related careers. Recognizing the critical role of S&T experts in global advancement, there is a need to adapt teaching methods to align with the interests of today’s youth. To address this, a group of senior lecturer-researchers from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Negeri Sembilan branch (UiTMCNS), led by Ts Dr Aslizah Mohd Aris, developed the “Let’s Science Up Kit.” This scientific experimental kit aims to engage primary school students and stimulate their interest in S&T. The researchers observed a lack of scientific apparatus in primary schools, particularly in rural areas, resulting in limited exposure to scientific experiments. The “Let’s Science Up Kit” features four microbiology experiment sets aligned with the Malaysian Ministry of Education’s curriculum. It includes a reference book, laboratory instructions and instructional videos accessible via QR codes, offering a hands-on and visual learning experience. The kit encourages students to conduct experiments at home, fostering early exposure to S&T. The kit received acclaim, winning a gold medal at the Malaysian Southern Region Innovative and Creative Group Convention 2022. It aims to enhance students’ understanding of microbiology through engaging practical activities, ultimately boosting their interest in S&T. This innovative approach seeks to attract more students to the S&T profession, ensuring a continuous stream of experts for future generations and supporting global modernization.

A Fascinating Summer Programme: Language Adventure at FBM and UiTM

The Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) at Malaysia’s Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Puncak Alam Campus, recently hosted a summer program for 11 non-business students from Japan’s National Institute of Technology, Ube College (NITUC). The primary objective of the program was to immerse these students in English language learning while introducing them to business principles through customized modules created specifically for them. FBM’s senior faculty members played crucial roles as facilitators and presenters during this onemonth program, held from August 25 to September 24, 2022, sharing their expertise and business acumen with the students. The program was a transformative experience for NITUC students, expanding their business knowledge, enhancing their English language proficiency, and offering opportunities for cultural immersion. Through buddy sessions and engaging activities, students developed connections with their peers, facilitators, and Malaysian lecturers, gaining insights into Malaysian history, culture, and traditions. Improved English language skills were evident as students actively participated in discussions and interactions. Ms Siti Aisyah Mokhtar, an instructor from NITUC, commended the program’s success, noting the significant knowledge and experience gained by students. She highlighted their remarkable progress in English proficiency during their month-long stay at UiTM. With the program’s resounding success, NITUC looks forward to the next installment, “Linguistic Journey @ FBM, UiTM 2.0,” scheduled for September 2023. In collaboration with the Student Affairs Division, Transportation Unit, and Bintong Travel & Tours Sdn. Bhd, the UiTM Shah Alam Student Representative Council organized the “Misi Salam Raya 2022” program from April 27 to April 30, 2022, to facilitate 132 students’ return to their hometowns in states like Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Pahang, and Johor. This initiative aimed to address concerns about students’ welfare and the congested public transport situation during the festive season, providing targeted bus transport to make their journeys home more accessible. The Pahang Branch Campus of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has entered into a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kumpulan Ladang-Ladang Perbadanan Kedah Sdn. Bhd. This partnership aims to enhance collaboration between academia and KLPK’s administration. Professor Ts Dr Mohd Ilham Adenan, Acting Rector of UiTM Pahang, and Mr Azizi bin Haji Ahmad, Managing Director of KLPK, were key signatories at the ceremony. Representatives from both institutions, including Deputy Directors from UiTM Pahang Branch, faculty members, and KLPK staff, attended the event. UiTM partners with the school to promote STEM among high school students

A decline in student interest in STEM subjects is concerning for the future of engineering, science, and technology. To address this, lecturers and graduate students from UiTM Negeri Sembilan Branch campus, Malaysia, initiated the “STEM Empowerment Programme” in partnership with a local high school. The program aims to engage students in hands-on STEM experiments and enhance their practical skills, preparing them for SPM examinations. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology experiments were conducted, and students were encouraged to explore independently. Additionally, they learned to write effective scientific reports. The program received positive feedback and plans to continue, especially for rural students lacking laboratory access. Developing Children’s Interest in Science

In the era of IR 4.0, there is a growing demand for highly skilled individuals in Malaysia, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The government recognizes the importance of prioritizing STEM-related education to meet this demand. Despite the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 emphasizing practical STEM education, there is a concerning decline in students choosing science majors in secondary schools. To address this, the School of Biology at UiTM Negeri Sembilan Branch campus, took the initiative to promote and empower STEM education among young students. They organized the “Little Scientist in Action!” program during a school holiday, involving 60 children aged 4 to 12. The program aimed to spark children’s interest in science, especially biology, through hands-on activities and laboratory experiments. Participants engaged in various biological studies, such as microorganism separation, plant transpiration, and animal observation, guided by facilitators from the biology study center. Interactive films and VR headsets were also used to cater to technological and digital learning needs. This program allowed primary school students to experience hands-on science projects, bridging the gap in access to laboratory facilities. It is expected to enhance students’ understanding, critical thinking skills, and enthusiasm for science, contributing positively to Malaysia’s STEM education goals.

UiTM’s School of Information Science Forges International Ties with Indonesia’s UPI in Librarianship and Information Studies

In April 2022, a seven-member delegation from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) began a three-month affiliation with Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), marking UiTM’s first outbound activity since borders were reopened. The delegation, from UiTM’s School of Information Science (SIS), collaborated with UPI’s Faculty of Education Studies, focusing on Librarianship and Information Studies. Their activities included educational visits to various libraries, museums, and participation in academic courses, enriching their experiences and enhancing UiTM’s reputation. The collaboration explored opportunities for joint academic and research programs and competency certifications in librarianship. Digital Transformation of Postgraduate Academic Governance at UiTM: The UPTrackS Initiative

The impact of postgraduate research on university rankings is undeniable. At UiTM, the processes related to supervisor nomination, research proposal defense, and thesis submission have been marred by bureaucratic inefficiencies. UiTM’s 27 Postgraduate Centers have, until recently, been managing academic procedures through manual, paper-based methods. These outdated methods not only hindered the efficient monitoring of applications but also proved to be time-consuming and costly. Recognizing the urgent need for a digital transformation in postgraduate studies governance, UiTM introduced the UiTM Postgraduate Tracking System (UPTrackS). This innovative system digitizes postgraduate academic management, ushering in streamlined and efficient procedures. The UPTrackS framework encompasses five key modules: supervisor nominations, research proposal (DRP) management, thesis examiner nominations, thesis evaluation, and research progress tracking. What sets UPTrackS apart is its integration with all of UiTM’s database systems, including SIMS for student information, IReS for research grant details, STARS HRMS for staff records, and PRISMA for publication information. With UPTrackS, students can now complete academic procedures online and monitor their status in real time. UPTrackS represents a paperless, transparent, and standardized system, harnessing digital technology to track research progress and also document research achievements. It effectively consolidates all postgraduate application processes and procedures into one cohesive platform.

UiTM Quality Objective Statement (2019-2025)

The curriculum review process is a continuous process to uphold Universiti Teknologi MARA’s vision, mission and objectives; the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2015-2025) (Higher Education); and other national policies. The excerpt from the UiTM Quality Objective 2 of the UiTM Quality Objective Statement (2019-2025) states: “Ensure 100% of the Curriculum Undergo the Curriculum Review Process At least Once in 3 to 5 Years”. The justifications to conduct curriculum reviews include [1] Continual Quality Improvement (CQI); [2] addressing feedback from external examiner / academic advisor / industry panel;and [3] compliance to a number of other important criteria such as the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) 2nd Edition, Programme Standards, Professional Bodies, Education 5.0@UiTM, HETVET@UiTM, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and many others.

Embedding SDGs goals in UiTM Curriculum

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in driving forward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As HEIs increasingly embrace sustainability as a core value and aim to enhance their global presence, it becomes imperative to integrate the SDGs into the very fabric of their programs and courses. A study has been conducted to gauge the extent to which the SDGs have been woven into the curriculum at UiTM. Methodology involved data collection from UiTM’s online syllabus system, focusing on programs in the fields of science, engineering, and technology. This included all engineering disciplines (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering) and Computer Sciences, totaling 520 courses. The analysis of this data allowed researchers to assess the level of SDGs integration and perform a thorough examination of the curriculum’s dimensions.The results uncovered a commendable effort, with most SDGs well represented in the curriculum. However, it was evident that three SDGs had not been adequately addressed. Notably, SDG 9 emerged as the most extensively incorporated goal, featured in 25% of the courses, followed by SDG 4 (15%), and SDGs 11 and 12 (each at 12%). Notably, mechanical engineering courses exhibited a particularly strong emphasis on SDG integration compared to other disciplines. This discovery provides valuable insights into the current state of sustainability within the university curriculum and highlights opportunities for enhancement. The researchers recommended a comprehensive review to ensure the inclusion of the three SDGs currently underrepresented in the curriculum. By addressing all SDGs, researchers aspire to cultivate globally-minded graduates who are well-informed and committed to fostering a harmonious and sustainable future. UiTM Among 8 HLIs Collaborating with MQA to Empower Lifelong Learning Agenda

UiTM is one of eight Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) collaborating with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to launch the Stand-Alone Microcredentials (SAMC) pilot program. This initiative aims to provide flexible and dynamic study materials for short-term courses, promoting lifelong learning. Individuals participating in these courses can receive recognition benefits, including credit transfer, which may enable them to graduate upon meeting the respective HLI’s conditions. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ceremony, witnessed by YB Datuk Seri Datuk Noraini Ahmad, the Minister of Higher Education, took place at the Ministry of Higher Education in Putrajaya, further empowering the lifelong learning agenda.
