Epitomising the Highest Ideals
of Politeness, Reasoning, and Wisdom

Change is inevitable, and as we move forward, we must balance progress with preservation, and innovation with tradition. As Malaysia’s largest public university, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) believes that the synergy we build together will foster an inclusive environment reflecting our nation’s diversity, spreading the superpower of oneness.

In all that we do, we uphold profound and enduring values: pride, humility, and selflessness. We believe that by putting others first, we embody the belief that what we give is what we receive in return. These values are not merely philosophical; they are woven into the foundation of our institution, manifesting both physically in our conduct and metaphorically in the impact we create on the world.

Therefore, in the 2024 UiTM Global Goals, we introduce Budi, a concept that epitomises the highest ideals of politeness, reasoning, and wisdom for a sustainable tomorrow. It embodies values that resonate deeply with our shared responsibility towards future generations. Rooted in the heart of Malaysian culture, the philosophy of Budi serves as a guiding light in fostering meaningful relationships among Malaysians - a heritage we can all be proud of, the strength of a nation.

At Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), this philosophy has long been intertwined with our institutional mandate. Since its inception, UiTM has been entrusted with a special mission: to produce Bumiputera graduates who excel as Budiman professionals, carrying the mantle of spirituality, leadership, intelligence, creativity, and ethical responsibility.

As we reflect on this mission, this year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of UiTM’s establishment as a university, a humble journey defined by transformation and progress. Our transformation from Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM) to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 1999 was more than a change in name. It symbolises our evolution into a comprehensive, modern civic university, one that remains firmly rooted in its local identity while being future-ready and globally engaged.

This milestone has been made possible by the unwavering support and dedication of our community and yourselves, positioning UiTM at the forefront of higher education in Malaysia and beyond.

Looking ahead, as we approach 2025, we face another pivotal moment. The final phase of the UiTM 2025 vision challenges us to strengthen our position as a globally renowned university while staying true to our local values. Amid these challenges, we must navigate the delicate balance between our global ambitions and steadfast local commitments. We need to adapt to new realities, address emerging paradoxes in this era of uncertainty, and uphold the principles that define us, ensuring a clear and reassuring direction for our future.

With this vision in mind, our role in this journey is crucial. Central to this progression are the principles we refer to as the ‘9Rs’: Royal, Race, Religion, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Relevant, Referred, and Respected. These will continue to define our ethos. When we empower our community, it means embracing both tangible and intangible transformations. As a result, our academic and research efforts have expanded beyond fundamental work to applied innovations, strengthened through collaboration with strategic partners.

Building on this advancement, UiTM remains steadfast in its mission to contribute to a sustainable and equitable world, driven by the timeless wisdom of Budi, which makes us Budiman as people who benefit the lives around us.

In light of this, we invite you to explore the 2024 UiTM Global Goals, a document that not only details our achievements and impact but underscores our commitment to making a difference because we are here for the world.

Since its establishment in 2020, the UiTM Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development (IBSD) has played a pivotal role in advancing research, innovation, and knowledge creation in biodiversity and sustainability. As a key driver in these fields, IBSD not only contributes to academic excellence but also shapes initiatives that address the pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges of our time.

Our mission is firmly aligned with the UiTM 2025 Strategic Plan, which aims to position UiTM as a globally renowned university in science, technology, humanities, and entrepreneurship. The institute’s work mirrors key national and global priorities, reflecting government policies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through initiatives that resonate with these goals, we measure our impact using vital metrics, such as national and international rankings, and the UiTM Happiness Index, ensuring our contribution is both significant and measurable.

Central to our work is the UiTM Global Goals initiative, a flagship project that demonstrates our commitment to the 17 SDGs. This annual report not only documents our progress but also serves as a comprehensive guide for future action. It is the collective dedication of our university community, partners, and stakeholders that makes this project a resounding success, accessible, impactful, and forward-looking.

This year, our report theme is built around the noble values of Budi, a philosophy deeply ingrained in the Malaysian identity. The values of Budi, which speak to wisdom, ethical conduct, and societal harmony are woven into our narrative, offering a visual and data-driven exploration of how these values influence personal, national, and global relations.

More importantly, Budi aligns seamlessly with the global agenda of sustainability. Its emphasis on peace, justice, and inclusivity echoes the aims of SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Yet, Budi extends beyond this to touch all 17 global goals, offering a moral and ethical foundation for building a sustainable and equitable future for all.

As we look to the future, I extend my deepest gratitude to the entire UiTM community, our dedicated partners, and all stakeholders. Your invaluable contributions and unwavering support make our shared vision of sustainability a reality. Together, we will continue to forge pathways toward a prosperous, sustainable future.

In closing, I warmly invite you to delve into this year’s report, to not only reflect on our progress but also to be inspired by the noble values that drive our work. May this report serve as both a testament to our achievements and a blueprint for the future.
