UiTMLaw Triumphs as Champions in LAWASIA Moot competition

In the 18th LAWASIA International Moot Competition (National Rounds), which took place from 18th to 20th August 2023, students from the Faculty of Law Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTMLaw) demonstrated their prowess in advocacy by securing victory. The competition was organised by the LAWASIA International Moot Secretariat and the Bar Council of Malaysia, hosted at the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) in Kuala Lumpur. Two teams were selected to represent UiTMLaw and the first team secured the championship title by prevailing over their counterparts from the Faculty of Law at the University of Malaya. The moot competition faithfully replicated an arbitration proceeding, during which participants meticulously researched intricate legal matters, scrutinised pertinent legal provisions, and articulated persuasive arguments to support their assigned cases. The moot problem presented in the 18th LAWASIA International Moot Competition (National Rounds) revolved around legal quandaries between two fictional nations, including applying AI to arbitrate a legal dispute, countering terrorism and the right to privacy. The competition’s overarching objective was aimed at nurturing the upcoming generation of legal practitioners and advocates, honing their aptitude and skills to navigate intricate legal dilemmas. Those involved will be equipped with essential proficiencies and expertise requisite for prominence within the legal sphere.

Felo Perdana Government Leadership Experience for UiTM Student

The First Fellow Handover Ceremony occurred on 23rd August 2023, at Perdana Putra Building, Putrajaya, Malaysia. The Felo Perdana programme, now in its 11th year, helps young people understand government operations, enhance communication skills, build confidence, and engage in government planning and policy-making. In 2023, 56 Fellows joined the programme, working directly with Cabinet Members. Among them was Muhammad Firas Anvardeen, a final-semester Physical Education and Health student from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Selangor, gaining valuable experience and exposure beyond the campus. The program aligns with SDG 16, promoting inclusive, just, and strong institutions. It offers hands-on experience in government operations, enhancing communication, leadership, and administrative skills, and supports students’ growth by providing practical knowledge beyond classroom learning.

Unity in UCPh: Fostering Open-Mindedness and Interpersonal Skills Among Students

The Association of Accounting Diploma Students (PERSIDA) of UiTM Pahang Branch held a forum titled “Unity in UCPh” on 8th June 2023. The event, organised in line with Sustainable Development Goal 16, aimed to promote peace, justice, and strong institutions among students. The forum, featured two guest panelists, Nur Fatihah binti Roslan, the President of the PEERS club of UiTM Pahang Branch, and Noraeman Amin bin Noraswad the secretary of the club. The objective of the forum was to raise awareness on the importance of open-mindedness in accepting change and to instil a sense of caring among students, regardless of their background. The forum also provided tips on how to get along with new friends and dealing with introversion, aiming to encourage open interactions and maintain good manners among students, ultimately aiming to produce graduates who excel in academics, morals, and manners.

Strengthening National Security: UiTM’s IKK 2023 Study

The National Security Index Study (IKK) 2023, led by Prof. Dr. Yarina Ahmad of UiTM’s Institute of Bio-Diversity and Sustainable Development (IBSD), seeks to enhance the National Security Index (IKK) as outlined in the National Security Policy 2021-2025. Running from June to November 2023, the study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to assess and improve national security across various sectors in Malaysia. It incorporates nine core values: territorial sovereignty, socio-political stability, national unity, good governance, economic integrity, social justice, public security, sustainable development, and international recognition. The study also includes public perception assessments for transparency and balance. Appointed by the National Security Council, UiTM conducted this research with a budget of RM400,000, reflecting its commitment to advancing SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) through rigorous governance and stability research.

Enhancing Legal Management: UiTM’s Networked- Integrated Legal Affairs System for Transparent and Effective Governance

The Legal Advisor Office (PUU) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) proposes a Networked-Integrated Legal Affairs Management System to streamline the management of legal information and documents. This research focuses on the second phase of the NILAM project, which involves developing a comprehensive framework, conceptual model, and Legal Office Monitoring System. This system will monitor and track MoA/ MoU operations and generate reports for stakeholders, including Pusat Tanggungjawab (PTJs) such as the Vice Chancellor’s Office, ICAN, OIA, and the faculties. The development will proceed in five phases: requirement collection, system design, development, testing, and implementation. The result will be a web-based system that enhances transparency, supports effective governance, and aligns with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by improving institutional accountability and efficiency in managing legal affairs.

Strengthening Legal Protections: UiTM Leads Feasibility Study for Enacting a Public Defence Act in Malaysia

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has been awarded the lead role in the “Kajian Kewajaran Cadangan Penggubalan Akta Pembelaan Awam di Malaysia,” a pivotal study aimed at evaluating the feasibility of enacting a Public Defence Act in Malaysia. This comprehensive research will focus on assessing the need for enhanced public defense mechanisms and developing a legislative framework to strengthen legal protections for individuals. UiTM’s involvement includes analysing current public defense practices, identifying gaps, and proposing solutions to improve legal processes. The study will gather input from legal professionals and stakeholders to ensure a robust and practical approach. By leading this initiative, UiTM underscores its commitment to advancing justice and legal reform in Malaysia. This project aligns with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), contributing to more effective and equitable legal systems.

Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) uses Zakat to Implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The obligation of zakat is not only on individuals but also on business entities. Business entities are seen to provide higher and enormous business zakat payment prospects compared to individuals in line with the main purpose of establishing business entities is to generate profits. Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) is the largest capital and investment management company in Malaysia which also performs its business zakat obligation. Recently, the United Nations (UN) has outlined the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) covering social, economic, and environmental elements. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyse the relationship between the implementation of the SDGs through zakat issued by PNB. This qualitative study was conducted using data collection and data analysis methods. Data collection methods are done through library research. The data obtained were analysed based on inductive, deductive, and comparative methods to obtain the results of the study. The results of this study found out that PNB implements wakalah zakat in performing their business zakat obligation. PNB also achieved their SDGs agenda through the zakat payment activity.

UiTM Boosts Cyber Security Awareness with Engaging SULAM Program

The College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM) at Universiti Teknologi MARA Puncak Perdana Campus, in collaboration with Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Jawa, Shah Alam, successfully organised a SULAM (Service Learning Malaysia - University for Society) program to boost cyber security awareness. Over 100 students participated in this interactive, game-based event held at the Al-Ihsan Sustainable Pavilion, SK Padang Jawa. The program, led by 15 UiTM students from the Bachelor of Information Science (Honours) Information Content Management program, featured a sandwich board display, interactive videos from Cyber Security Malaysia (CSM), and cyber security-themed online games. Students received training on password etiquette, hacking dangers, and online gaming safety. They engaged in safety-based online games designed to captivate younger audiences. The program was well received, enhancing participants’ understanding of cyber security. KPPIM’s SULAM 2023/2024 initiative supports community empowerment, practical application of knowledge, and aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), contributing to the formation of Masyarakat Madani (a civil society).

UiTM Sparks Cyber Awareness with Engaging Workshop at As-Solihin Mosque

On 16th December 2023, the College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM) of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, in collaboration with As-Solihin Mosque, Kampung Padang Jawa, hosted a “Cyber Security Awareness Workshop” as part of the SULAM (Service Learning Malaysia - University for Society) program. Held at Jamaluddin Hall, the workshop engaged over 30 participants, including local children and teenagers.

Led by Muhammad Azri Arif Bin Mohd Yusof from the Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) Computer Network program and 21 KPPIM students, the event aimed to educate participants about evolving cyber threats. The As-Solihin Mosque Committee members are highly supportive of the program that was carried out. Encik Soleh Ahmad, the Nazir of As-Solihin Mosque, mentioned that while cyber technology offers many benefits, it can have negative consequences if misused. He expressed hope that the participants would learn valuable lessons from the workshop to safeguard themselves against cybercrime.

UiTM’s SULAM (Service Learning) activity was held on 15th August 2023 titled “Kesedaran Keselamatan Dunia Siber: Guardians of Cyberattack: Indicating of Student Awareness on Cyber Security” focuses on raising awareness about cybersecurity among students. The initiative aims to educate and engage students on the importance of protecting themselves from cyber threats and understanding best practices for online security. This activity involved workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions designed to enhance students’ knowledge of cybersecurity issues and foster a culture of vigilance and responsible behavior in the digital space. The program emphasize practical skills and awareness, helping students recognize potential cyber threats and respond effectively to ensure their personal and academic information is secure. Through active community engagement, Polis Bantuan UiTM raises awareness about safety protocols and collaborates closely with local law enforcement to enhance crime prevention and justice efforts.
