Financial Literacy Outreach: Empowering Orphans for a Brighter Future

A total of 39 students from the Bachelor of Finance Administration (Hons.) from the Institute of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (iCEPS), Shah Alam, held a programme with orphans at the Wardatul Jannah Orphans Foundation in Kota Damansara. The programme, titled “Linking Together with Orphans”, aimed to provide students with the opportunity to care for orphans by sharing knowledge in finance and education. The programme also aimed to strengthen friendship ties among students and foster relationships with the concept of “role models” for orphans. The participants engaged in outdoor activities such as “Money Jenga”, “Financial Obstacles”, “Pouring Water”, “Musical Chairs”, and other unique budgeting games to test their financial literacy and knowledge. The programme, categorised under academic and student development, aimed to enhance students’ learning and personal development by providing practical experience in applying academic knowledge of financial literacy in a real-world context.

Kotak Rezeki 4 Siswa: MPP Touch of Love Initiative in Student Rental Houses

A total of 125 sustenance boxes were distributed to more than 700 nonresident students of UiTM Shah Alam and UiTM Selangor Branch as a welfare initiative by the Student Representative Council (MPP) of UiTM Shah Alam. This was in collaboration with the Non-Resident Management Unit of UiTM Shah Alam and Selangor Branch to help students who reside outside of residential colleges.

The Kotak Rezeki 4 Siswa initiative, a project managed by the MPP UiTM Shah Alam, aims to foster collaboration with administrators and student leaders to address and respond to the complaints of students, especially those who reside around Shah Alam, Puncak Alam and Puncak Perdana. This programme also received sponsorship by Mydin, who contributed 50 boxes of dry food worth RM3,000 to be distributed to students in need.

“The UiTM Student Affairs Department is always concerned with the welfare of UiTM students. Congratulations to MPP, UPNR and all parties involved. Hopefully this effort can be continued in the future.” Thus was the remark by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, YBhg Prof Dr Hj Mohd Sazili Shahibi, in his brief speech when greeting the students at their residence.

Empowering Youth: Personal Financial Management Seminar at SMK Telok Gadong

The SULAM initiative was launched by the Ministry of Higher Education to combine learning objectives with community service in education. As part of this initiative, 109 Form 4 students from SMK Telok Gadong attended a seminar organised by 43 students of the Bachelor of Finance Administration (Hons.) programme from the Institute of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (iCEPS), Shah Alam. The programme was conducted as part of the project assignment for the Personal Financial Planning (FIN533) subject, which aimed to expose the community to financial knowledge and awareness in managing finances. The seminar began with a talk by Financial Planning Consultant, Azraei Muhamad Bin Idros, titled “Personal Financial Management: If You Don’t Continue Studying, Can You Become Rich?” Participants then engaged in hands-on group training activities, such as the “Money Mindset Challenge” and the “Spin the Wheel” game. The programme aimed to provide continuous benefits to students and the community, indirectly contributing to SDG 1: No Poverty.

Contemporary Islamic Contemporary Seminar

The Contemporary Islamic Philanthropy Seminar was organised by the Zakat Sedakah and Waqf Unit, UiTM Johor Branch, in collaboration with the Johor State Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ) Segamat District, the Academy of Contemporary Islamic Studies (ACIS), and the UiTM Johor Branch General Staff Union led by Mr. Mehat Mohammad Ruszaimeay bin Mohd Yusop. The seminar was organised to provide information to the general public on knowledge related to zakat worship, almsgiving, and waqf in a clear and accessible manner. The seminar also highlighted the role of the Johor State Islamic Religious Council as an important Government Statutory Body that can be referred to in relation to issues concerning Muslims.

The programme involved UiTM Johor Branch staff and Segamat District Public Staff, totalling 100 participants, who were instrumental in making the programme a success.

The initiative aims to foster a two-way relationship with the local community while imparting knowledge and enhancing spirituality, helping them better understand and connect to their Creator.

The study titled “e-Suripreneur: Business Readiness Modeling and Data Structuring of B40 Women Entrepreneurs’ Economic Wellbeing in the Digital Economy Ecosystem” was conducted by the UiTM Microwave Research Institute (MRI), aligning closely with SDG 1: No Poverty. It focuses on empowering B40 women entrepreneurs—those from the bottom 40% income group in Malaysia—by developing a model that assesses their business readiness and data structuring to enhance their economic wellbeing. The research aims to address poverty by equipping these women with the necessary digital tools and skills to succeed in the digital economy, thus providing them with opportunities for economic upliftment. The study emphasises the importance of digital literacy, financial access, and market connectivity, which are critical in breaking the cycle of poverty. By fostering a supportive ecosystem and leveraging data-driven insights, the project seeks to elevate the economic status of B40 women, promoting financial independence and sustainable livelihoods. This research highlights the role of digital platforms in reducing poverty by creating economic opportunities for underserved communities, contributing directly to the achievement of SDG 1 by addressing the root causes of poverty and promoting inclusive growth.

The ASNAFPRENEUR Project by UiTM Cawangan Pahang and Maybank Islamic Berhad (UiTMCPH-MIB)

The ASNAFPRENEUR programme, a collaboration between UiTM Cawangan Pahang and Maybank Islamic Berhad (UiTMCPH-MIB), was designed to uplift economically disadvantaged individuals, particularly those classified as “Asnaf” (those eligible for zakat), through entrepreneurship. This initiative directly aligns with SDG 1: No Poverty, by providing Asnaf participants with the necessary skills, resources, and mentorship to become self-sufficient entrepreneurs. The programme offers comprehensive training in business management, financial literacy, and digital tools, empowering participants to create sustainable income sources. By focusing on capacity building and economic empowerment, ASNAFPRENEUR aims to break the cycle of poverty among Asnaf communities, enabling them to achieve financial independence and improved living standards. IPR Programme: Enhancing Household Income through UiTM’s Sustainability Initiative

The “Inisiatif Pendapatan Rakyat” (IPR) program, or People’s Income Initiative, is part of the mapping and monitoring implementation under the Malaysian Ministry of Economy. It is a key component of the FKKH UiTM Sustainability Warrior/Green Marvel programme. Led by Prof. Madya Dr. Badrul Isa from the Faculty of Education, this initiative, with a total budget of RM2,160,000.00, is scheduled to run for two years involving UiTM branches in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor to engage a wide network of participants across these regions.

The primary objective of the programme is to implement comprehensive mapping and monitoring processes aimed at profiling household heads, submitting programme proposals, formulating targeted intervention actions, and overseeing the execution of the IPR Programme. The initiative seeks to enhance the income of approximately 1,400 households, helping them surpass the poverty income line.

Through its structured approach, the programme aims to provide valuable insights into household income dynamics and to develop actionable strategies for poverty alleviation. By leveraging UiTM’s academic resources and regional expertise, the programme aspires to make a significant impact on economic stability and social welfare within the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor.

Financial Literacy Programme: Empowering E-Kasih Participants for Economic Sustainability

The programme is the focus of the FKKH UiTM Sustainability Warrior/Green Marvel project. The initiative, which will run over the next two years, is led by Prof. Madya Dr. Aida Maria Ismail from the Accounting Faculty with a total cost of RM4,801,500.00. The programme enhances the financial literacy and management skills of 3,000 e-kasih participants across all 14 Malaysian states.

The Financial Literacy Programme (FLP-BMT/IPR) is designed to enhance the financial awareness, administration, and long-term planning of IPR/ BMT participants. Through the programme, they will be equipped with financial skills to effectively manage their income, reduce debt, and establish a secure financial future. The initiative offers comprehensive training to assist individuals in optimising their income and making informed financial decisions.

The initiative intends to enhance the financial stability and literacy of the community. Specialised financial education will enhance the wellbeing and capacity of participants to address economic challenges. This approach is essential for the financial empowerment and sustainability of IPR and BMT beneficiaries, thereby enhancing Malaysia’s economy.

Basic Course of Hydroponic Cultivation and Fertigation Technology

The Department of Built Environment and Technology, College of Built Environment Studies UiTM Perak, Seri Iskandar Campus conducted a basic hydroponic and fertigation technology course for the elderly under the sponsorship of the Center Aspiration of Silver Children (PASAK): an agency that aims to produce skilled workers to meet the needs of various sectors within and outside the state of Perak. PASAK also plays a central role in improving the socio-economic ecosystem in the State of Perak across all levels of society, including urban, rural, graduates, single mothers, orphans, and the elderly.

This course involved a total of 20 participants from the Kampong Gajah Seniors Activity Center (PAWE) by exposing the participants to the basics of hydroponic technology and fertigation technology in vegetable production. The course aims to impart knowledge and equip participants with the confidence to carry out hydroponic or fertigation projects at a large or small scale, such as at the perimeters of their house. The course includes an upskilling on theory, followed by a hands-on activity and a visit to the site of a successful hydroponic project to inspire the participants to carry out similar efforts in the future.

UiTM Faculty of Medicine Spreads Eid Joy: Ramadan Charity for Orphans at Rumah Cahaya Kasih

In a heartwarming initiative, the Corporate Communications Unit, Faculty of Medicine, UiTM, organised a special programme for the orphans of Rumah Cahaya Kasih during Ramadan, aiming to bring joy and foster community spirit for Eid Mubarak.

The organisers’ commitment to giving back was evident as they provided “Baju Raya”, the traditional Malay attire, to the children to ensure they were dressed in style for the upcoming Eid ul Fitr celebration. Essential kitchen supplies like Milo, cooking oil, and rice were also donated, ensuring sustained support for the orphanage.

The highlight of the event was the children’s enthusiastic enjoyment of McDonald’s “Happy Meal” for iftar, creating an atmosphere of excitement and joy. The presence of the esteemed dean and administrative staff underscored the event’s importance, emphasising philanthropy and community engagement.

This programme exemplifies the power of collective generosity during Ramadan, showcasing how small gestures can make a significant difference in the lives of underprivileged children. It is a testament to compassion and community spirit, inspiring hope for future initiatives.

UiTM Builds a Model for Measuring The Well-Being of Indigenous Communities Based on the Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index Approach

This research project sought to improve the well-being of Orang Asli communities. The project involved 200 participants from the Negrito and Senoi tribes, with extensive data collection completed through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. Over RM500,000 was allocated and spent on various aspects of the research, including fieldwork, data analysis, and community engagement initiatives. Through the project, critical areas of deprivation were identified, helping to shape preliminary policy recommendations for JAKOA and the Malaysian government.

Initial findings indicated significant improvements in access to education and healthcare services for about 150 individuals, highlighting the impact of targeted interventions based on comprehensive poverty measurement. The project aims to continue to expand the study to additional communities and further validate the model to support effective policy formulation and implementation.

This research project aims to support SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by providing a comprehensive and inclusive measurement of poverty among the Orang Asli communities. By developing a new MPI model based on UNDP standards, the study aligns with the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RM-12) and JAKOA’s policies to eradicate poverty and improve the socio-economic well-being of the Orang Asli.

Brunei-UiTM Zakat and Waqf Collaborative Visit

UiTM Johor Branch visited the Department of Zakat, Waqf, and Baitulmal Affairs in Brunei Darussalam in an effort to strengthen cooperation and exchange ideas. The delegation, led by UiTM’s senior officials, engaged in discussions regarding the administrative processes and operational frameworks of the department’s work. The visit aimed to improve operational efficiencies and adopt best practices in managing zakat and waqf resources. The visit also highlighted the importance of effective governance and operational cooperation between institutions. The delegation exchanged knowledge and insights about Had Kifayah, programmes implemented, and assistance provided to the people of Brunei Darussalam. The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs between the two parties.

Agro Buddies Project: Increasing Entrepreneurship and Income among B40 Communities in Kuala Muda

The SIG Solid, Management and Business Department, UiTM Pulau Pinang, in collaboration with the Seberang Perai Utara Agriculture Department, Seberang Perai Utara Community Welfare Department, Seberang Perai Utara Children’s Protection Team and the Youth Serelawan Army, successfully organised the Project Agro Buddies Park to increase entrepreneurship and income among the B40 Kuala Muda, Penaga, and Seberang Perai Utara community.

The Taman Agro Buddies project was organised with the aim to help household members of the B40 community in Kuala Muda reduce subsistence costs by producing their own food ingredients with the guidance of the Department of Agriculture. This project was implemented in two sessions. In the first session, a seedling workshop was conducted by the Seberang Perai Utara Agriculture Department, where participants, namely children and parents, were shown how to plant mustard greens using the NFT technology method. In the second session, participants were given a briefing on the importance of entrepreneurship to increase family income and were taught to manage finances effectively.

The Agro Buddies Park project has received a good response from the B40 Kuala Muda Penaga community and positive feedback from the Pulau Pinang state government. The Exco of Agrotechnology and Food Security and the Development of the Pulau Pinang State Cooperative had expressed their intention to expand the Agro Buddies Park concept throughout Penang Island, underscoring its effectiveness.

Zakat and Waqf Benchmarking and Collaboration Visit 2023

The Zakat, Sedekah and Waqf Unit at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) held a return benchmark visit to the Universiti Teknologi MARA Johor Branch. The delegation, led by Associate Professor Dr. Ahmad Che Yaacob, discussed the operation of zakat and waqf, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two universities. The visit also included a site visit to the Very Fresh Durian Orchard of UiTM Johor Branch, where guests enjoyed fried bananas and cassava. The visit focused on evaluating and enhancing administrative frameworks for zakat and waqf, sharing best practices, and fostering institutional cooperation.
