AGRI-Enterprise Risk System Model (AGENT-RSM): Towards a Responsible Fruit Value Chain in Malaysia
The “AGRI-Enterprise Risk System Model (AGENT-RSM): Towards a Responsible Fruit Value Chain in Malaysia” is a project conducted by UiTM researchers from the Faculty of Plantation Management and Agrotechnology, which aimed to enhance the sustainability and resilience of Malaysia’s fruit value chain, aligning with SDG 2: Zero Hunger. The initiative seeks to develop a comprehensive risk management system that addresses the challenges faced by agricultural enterprises, particularly in fruit production, which is vital for food security and nutrition. AGENT-RSM focuses on identifying and mitigating risks across the entire fruit value chain, from production to distribution. This includes addressing environmental, economic, and social risks that could disrupt food supply and compromise the livelihoods of farmers. By implementing a responsible and efficient risk management model, the project aims to ensure a stable and sustainable supply of fruits, contributing to food availability and affordability. The model also promotes responsible agricultural practices to reduce waste and enhance productivity, which directly supports the objectives of SDG 2 in ending hunger and achieving food security. Additionally, AGENT-RSM emphasises the importance of equitable resource distribution, ensuring that smallholder farmers are included in the value chain, thereby improving their economic well-being and contributing to the broader goal of ending hunger and promoting sustainable agriculture in Malaysia.
A Framework on Crop Residue Adoption for Cattle Feed as an Adaptation to Climate Change and Ensuring Food Security in Malaysia
The project titled “A Framework on Crop Residue Adoption for Cattle Feed as an Adaptation to Climate Change and Ensuring Food Security in Malaysia” headed by UiTM researchers aims to enhance food security and agricultural sustainability, aligning with SDG 2: Zero Hunger. The initiative focuses on utilising crop residues—agricultural by-products that are often discarded—as a valuable resource for cattle feed. This approach addresses the dual challenges of climate change and food security by promoting sustainable livestock farming practices. In the face of climate change, this framework provides an innovative solution to ensure the availability of affordable and nutritious cattle feed. By adopting crop residues, the project reduces waste, lowers feed costs, and supports the livelihoods of farmers by contributing to a more resilient agricultural sector. The framework also emphasises sustainable resource management to optimise existing agricultural outputs to create a circular economy within the farming industry. This approach not only enhances food security by maintaining stable livestock production but also mitigates the environmental impact of agriculture, thereby supporting the goals of SDG 2 in ending hunger, achieving food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture in Malaysia.
Beneficial Plant as Trap Crops in Reducing Mealybug, Dysmicoccus Brevipes (Pseudococcidae) Infestation on Pineapple MD2 Variety
The project titled “Beneficial Plant as Trap Crops in Reducing Mealybug, *Dysmicoccus brevipes* (Pseudococcidae) Infestation on Pineapple MD2 Variety” conducted by UiTM researchers explores an innovative and sustainable approach to pest management in agriculture, directly aligning with SDG 2: Zero Hunger. The initiative focuses on using beneficial plants as trap crops to naturally reduce the infestation of mealybugs; a significant pest affecting the MD2 pineapple variety in Malaysia. By strategically planting these trap crops, which attract and contain mealybugs, the project aims to minimise the use of chemical pesticides, thereby promoting a healthier and more sustainable agricultural practice. This method not only protects the pineapple crops from damage but also supports the production of high-quality, nutritious fruit, contributing to food security. It also enhances biodiversity and fosters an ecological balance within the farming system, which reduces dependency on harmful chemicals that can negatively impact the environment and human health. This approach ensures the sustainability of pineapple farming, secures the livelihoods of farmers, and supports the goals of SDG 2 by promoting sustainable agriculture practices, reducing food loss, and ensuring the availability of safe and nutritious food.
