UiTM Dentistry Heads to Xi’an for Summer Camp

UiTM’s Faculty of Dentistry’s pursuit of academic excellence through international recognition was operationalised in 2023 in a Dental Summer Training Summer Camp organised by Xi’an Medical University (XMU). Six(6) dental students who had performed well both in academic and clinical training were accompanied by the senior management academics and staff of the faculty as they participated in academic discussions, workshops and lectures as well as tours of historic sites of the city which included the Dental Museum at the Air Force Medical University. The museum is significant as it displays detailed records complete with evidence of dental history from inception to the current day on the evolution of dentistry worldwide.

This summer programme is not only intended to fortify the relationship between XMU and UiTM but also potentiate research collaborations, cultural exchange, knowledge and ideas discourse among the participants thus making it aligned with quality education goals (SDG 4). It also acts as a platform for globally direct interaction and exchange for UiTM dentistry students.

UiTM Negeri Sembilan Fosters Global Citizenship

UiTM Negeri Sembilan Kuala Pilah Campus Chemistry and Environmental Studies’ 6.0 series Global Outreach Programme (GOP 6.0) brought together more than 80 students and lecturers from four Indonesian universities. The programme featured activities covering colloquiums, presentations, bilateral discussions, traditional sports, 3-minute-research presentations, cultural activities (theatre and dance performances) and an International Community Service Programme 2023 (ICSP ’23) that focused on scientific and personal development, sharing experiences and knowledge with the objective of fostering a global work culture.

GOP 6.0 Programme focuses on embedding a more balanced global need in students as they internalise aspects of empathy, respect and gratitude. Intended to ensure quality education and academic sustainability (SDG 4), its objective of fostering cultural awareness and understanding in addition to encouraging students to explore and learn about the diversity of cultures, traditions and languages provides the necessary platform for the nurturing of global thinkers while appreciating the richness of human diversity.

UiTM Perak Academic Blends IR4.0 into BIO122

The subject BIO122, Histology of Cell and Tissue, is a blended learning course incorporating the elements of the fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0), such as the use of the Internet of Things (IoT), into the teaching and learning process. With a focus on student-centred learning, interactive and game-based Web 2.0/internet apps provides the basis of learning.

Tavasuria A/P Elangovan, from the Faculty of Applied Sciences conducted the teaching of BIO122 subject to 143 students from 5 classes enrolled in the Diploma Science programme in the first semester of October 2023 until February 2024 with an added extension of six weeks as part of the method process.

The incorporation of interactive elements enhances the learning experience by rendering it more enjoyable as the integration of elements of gamification into the biology teaching and learning process resulted in an increased level of enthusiasm and motivation, active participation and engagement among students in relation to their engagement with the subject matter.

In conclusion, technology plays a significant role in shaping the future of high-quality and accessible education for all students. Achieving a high quality of education leads to the accomplishment of the fourth goal (SDG 4): quality education, outlined within the framework of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UiTM’s creative “SAVE THE EGG: EGG DROP PROTECTIVE DEVICE COMPETITION”

The “Save the Egg: Egg Drop Protective Device Competition,” held on 16th 2023, at the College of Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam, challenged students to design a device that could protect an egg dropped from various heights, using principles of dynamics. The students were given two hours and a choice of 17 items to showcase their creativity and engineering skills. Winners were selected based on the highest drop survival, best engineering concept and most innovative design. This competition makes a meaningful contribution to quality education (SDG 4) by offering practical, hands-on learning experiences that boost technical knowledge, spark creativity, and encourage teamwork and communication. By blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, the event highlights what effective, high-quality education should look like.

Developing a New Media Usage Model for Public University Students Based on the Ai-Ta’lil Bi Al-Hikmah Concept

This research focuses on developing a new media usage model for higher education students, grounded in the concept of Al-Ta’lil Bi Al-Hikmah (Rationalisation with Wisdom). This model aims to integrate modern media tools into educational practices while emphasising on ethical and sound use of new media which is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. The project seeks to enhance students’ engagement and learning outcomes by creating a framework that incorporates new media effectively within academic settings. It promotes a balanced approach to using digital tools, ensuring they serve educational purposes and support critical thinking and responsible media consumption. By grounding the model in Al-Ta’lil Bi Al-Hikmah, the research emphasises the importance of wisdom and rationalisation in media use, fostering a more thoughtful and ethical educational environment. This approach aims to improve the quality of education and digital literacy among students, contributing to a more inclusive and effective learning experience.

Indigenous Knowledge and Education Pedagogical Model : Sustainable Learning Among Indigenous Community

The research above concentrates on integrating indigenous knowledge into educational practices to promote sustainable learning within indigenous communities. This study aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, by advocating for inclusive and equitable education systems that respect and incorporate indigenous perspectives. The research proposes a pedagogical model that combines traditional indigenous knowledge with contemporary educational methods to create a culturally relevant and sustainable learning environment. By valuing and incorporating indigenous ways of knowing, the model aims to enhance educational outcomes and preserve cultural heritage. It emphasises the importance of adapting educational practices to reflect the values, traditions, and knowledge systems of indigenous communities, thus ensuring that education is both relevant and respectful of their unique identities. The study seeks to address educational disparities by providing a framework that supports the empowerment of indigenous learners through a curriculum that acknowledges and builds upon their cultural strengths. This approach not only contributes to achieving SDG 4 by improving access to quality education but also promotes the sustainability of indigenous cultures and knowledge, fostering a more inclusive and respectful educational landscape.

Cyber Resilience Autism Education Data Centre Using Virtualisation Platform

This research project examines the issue of enhancing the educational experience for individuals with autism through advanced technological solutions, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. The project aims to develop a cyber-resilient data centre that employs virtualisation platforms to securely manage and deliver educational resources tailored for students with autism. The core objective is to create a robust and adaptable educational infrastructure that ensures the protection and availability of sensitive data while providing customised learning experiences. Virtualisation technology allows for the efficient and scalable deployment of educational tools and resources, catering to the unique needs of autistic learners. By leveraging this technology, the project addresses challenges related to data security, accessibility, and personalised education. This approach supports SDG 4 by improving the quality and accessibility of education for students with autism, offering them equitable opportunities to thrive in a safe and supportive digital environment. The project ultimately aims to contribute to inclusive education by integrating advanced technology with a focus on cyber resilience, enhancing learning outcomes for all students.

Knowledge Transfer Via-Asnaf ACT Programme

UiTM FKKH(Green Campus Sustainability Festival) 2023 featured the innovative Knowledge Transfer Via i-Asnaf ACT programme; an initiative aimed at imparting business skills to aspiring “asnaf”(needy) entrepreneurs through a comprehensive knowledge transfer approach, in accordance with SDG 4. The programme initiated by UiTM Selangor, Kampus Puncak Alam was funded by the Maybank Islamic Industry Grant, SKUM Contribution Grant, and Perlis Islamic University College (KUIPs) Matching Grant, totalling RM308,050.00. 420 participants had been identified to benefit from 22 programmes in 11 states from 27th May 2023, to 26th May 2024. Additionally, 44 B40 students from the Faculty of Accountancy at UiTM were involved in the programme, where they assisted in the transmission of information and the development of business skills and social responsibility.

The programme is targeted to provide instruction to aspiring entrepreneurs in the areas of cost accounting, stock management, business law, online application usage, record-keeping, and financial management. The use of digital record-keeping by utilising online and classroom resources with i-Asnaf ACT to enhance the knowledge and skills of “asnaf” entrepreneurs is based on the result of prior research that demonstrated low education, non-compliance with business laws, and the absence of company records among “asnaf” businesses.

The targeted outcomes of this 2 phase-initiative are to expand the number of zakat payers by 2024, enhance the business abilities of Asnaf entrepreneurs and eventually establish UiTM as a centre of academic excellence and knowledge transfer in micro-entrepreneurship and small and medium industries.

High School STEM Engagement: Fostering Interest

In a bid to foster interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among high school students due to the marked decline in science stream majors, The Faculty of Applied Sciences, UiTM Negeri Sembilan Campus was invited by Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bahau (a high school in Negeri Sembilan) to organise a science and mathematics exhibition at the school for two weeks. Deemed as crucial in preparing the next generation of innovators and problem solvers, as they navigate through the fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0), the observed decline in these subjects was attributed to students’ perception of the difficulty in understanding the subjects.

More than 800 participants comprising students, counsellors, teachers, staff and representatives from the other educational institutions took part in the exhibition. Academics and laboratory assistants from the Departments of Biology, Physics, Food Technology, Textile Technology and Mathematics UiTM were instrumental in providing opportunities to invigorate interest and gain knowledge through exploratory experiments and games leaving them inspired and eager to delve deeper into the world of science and technology. Initiatives like this offer students engaging, hands-on learning experiences, making STEM activities enjoyable and captivating, ultimately enabling students to go beyond mere rote learning. UiTM looks forward to the continued involvement in such programmes outside the school especially for rural students who lack laboratory facilities and expertise, in our endeavour to ensure quality education as outlined in SDG 4.

Young Doctor Apprentice Programme (DMAP): Nurturing the Passion for Science

The Department of Basic Sciences of the Faculty of Health Sciences UiTM Selangor organised a programme titled the Young Doctor Apprentice Programme (DMAP) in collaboration with Sekolah Kebangsaan Tambak Java (SEKTAJ), Jeram, Selangor. Government agencies such as National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), the Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department were also involved. The DMAP programme provides a platform for the transfer and sharing of knowledge related to Health Sciences, Basic Medicine and First Aid, Mental Health and Volunteering with the local community and also school members. Its main purpose is to empower the School’s Young Doctor Club consisting of Level 2 students as DMAP ambassadors and knowledge development agents in their respective schools.

The implementation of the DMAP programme coincides with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (UN), particularly SDG 4 Quality Education. In addition, it also concurs with SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, SDG 16 Peace and String Institutions, as well as SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals. The programme will be expanded to selected schools and involve more young ambassadors among school students in order to facilitate the Quadruple Helix network among multiple sectors in the community that is symbiotic and beneficial to all parties.

MyReview Challenge 2023: A Collaboration between APB UiTM Cawangan Pahang and SK (FELDA) Jengka 10

The Academy of Language Studies (APB) UiTM Cawangan Pahang successfully organised the MyReview Challenge for Standard 6, book loving students from SK (Felda) Jengka 10. The Challenge or competition aims to inculcate the love of reading English books and build confidence in English communication as well as unleash their inner story-telling talents and thoughtful insights.

Out of the 15 students participants in this literary adventure, three came out victorious. MyReviewChallenge was a resounding success because of the huge commitment given by the Department of Academy of Language Studies UiTM Cawangan Pahang, Pn Hajah Zahalina, the Headmistress of SK (Felda) Jengka 10) and guest judges En. Amir Hamzah & Pn. Aminah to the programme. APB’s aspiration towards achieving SDG 4 & SDG 17’s goals has borne fruit as the programme is the fourth instalment since it was first introduced in 2020.

The Basics of Blood Transfusion – From Puncak Alam to the National Blood Centre

The academic visit to the National Blood Centre by 63 Semester 3 Degree students accompanied by 4 academics from the Medical Laboratory Technology Programme (HS241), Faculty of Health Sciences, Puncak Alam, Selangor is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (UN), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing. With the objective of obtaining information and exposure to the expertise services in the field of Blood Procurement and Donation, Immunohaematology, Blood Supply Management, ethical compliance and accreditation of responsible bodies the visit helps students reinforce understanding and learning of the Basics of Blood Transfusion (MLT443).

The visit entailed a lecture by the Head of Transfusion Services, Medical Laboratory Technologist on blood groups other than the main blood groups and video viewing on types of laboratories available as well as the processes and procedures involved in handling blood obtained from blood donation at the Centre. This academic visit initiative is the outcome of Learning Collaboration with the industry as collaboration between educational institutions and industry is important in ensuring that graduates acquire knowledge and skills relevant to the real needs of industry.

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has developed its own open learning platform which is accessible to the public that currently offers an extensive list of subjects from various disciplines. UiTM Digital Library Leads the Way

In line with propagating quality education (SDG 4) in Malaysia, through digitalisation of knowledge and information, Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak (PTAR) or the UiTM library is now made accessible to the public Monday to Sunday. The library provides a variety of services which include membership, internal book loans, interlibrary loans, online databases access, information literacy classes, PhD clinics and many more.

PTAR has undergone five (5) phases of transformation, culminating in its evolution into a Digital Library. Teaching and Learning Policy 2020: Championing Flexibility, Inclusivity and Equity

Digital Transformation of Postgraduate Academic Governance at UiTM: The UPTrackS Initiative

UiTM’s 27 Postgraduate Centres recently implemented the digital transformation in postgraduate studies governance by introducing the UiTM Postgraduate Tracking System (UPTrackS). The system is a solution to the manual and paper based processes related to monitoring of applications, supervisor nomination, research proposal defence, and thesis submission often marred by bureaucratic inefficiencies that also proved to be time-consuming and costly. This innovative system digitises postgraduate academic management, ushering in streamlined and efficient procedures. The UPTrackS framework encompasses five key modules: supervisor nominations, research proposal (DRP) management, thesis examiner nominations, thesis evaluation, and research progress tracking.

What sets UPTracks apart is its integration with all of UiTM’s database systems, including SIMS for student information, IReS for research grant details, STARS HRMS for staff records, and PRISMA for publication information. This interconnectedness facilitates the management of academic processes and offers valuable accessibility to information regarding supervisors (CPS). With UPTracks, students can now complete academic procedures online and monitor their status in real time. UPTrackS represents a paperless, transparent, and standardised system, harnessing digital technology to track research progress and also document research achievements. It effectively consolidates all postgraduate application processes and procedures into one cohesive platform thus making this initiative align with achieving quality education as stipulated in SDG 4.

UiTM Quality Objective Statement (2019-2025)

The curriculum review process is a continuous process to uphold Universiti Teknologi MARA’s vision, mission and objectives; the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2015- 2025) (Higher Education); and other national policies. The excerpt from the UiTM Quality Objective 2 of the UiTM Quality Objective Statement (2019-2025) states: “Ensure 100% of the curriculum undergo the Curriculum Review Process at least once in 3 to 5 Years”. The justifications to conduct curriculum reviews include:

• Continual Quality Improvement (CQI)
• addressing feedback from external examiner / academic advisor / industry panel
