Innovation of Solar-Powered Kayak in Pahang River to Instil Patriotism

The Institute of Malay Thought & Leadership (IMPAK), the Student Affairs Division of UiTM Shah Alam and UiTM Pahang Branch in collaboration with the Temerloh Municipal Council, organised an expedition using solar powered kayaks down the Pahang River. As an act of patriotism, the expedition aimed to fuel the 66th Independence Day Celebration and the 60th Malaysia Day Celebration. Through the expedition, IMPAK intended to expose solar technology to the community by introducing the Solar Powered Electric Kayak. IMPAK hoped that the community could use this innovation as a model for the creation of more solar powered products to be used in the agricultural sector such as fishing, animal husbandry and farming.

Besides that, the IMPAK researchers will also produce a write-up documenting the historical, cultural and artistic values obtained from the places visited during this expedition, which started from the Lipis district to the Pekan district

The expedition also featured a Cyber Security Campaign and Introduction to the Digital Economy, in which IMPAK collaborated with the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission and the Malaysian Digital Foundation, aimed at raising awareness about cyber security and introducing online business methods for the rural communities especially in Jerantut and Temerloh.

Geographic Information System (GIS) for Sustainable Energy: Professional Practice Seminar

The UiTM Perlis Branch of Architecture Studies organised a programme titled “Talk Professional Practice: The Role of GIS in the Sustainability of the Electric Power Industry” for students undergoing the Professional Practice course (GSS682) as well as undergraduate and post-graduate students of College of Built Environment. The invited speakers from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) shared knowledge on the role of GIS in TNB and its applications in dam construction, electric cable tower location, and river sedimentation in Cameron Highlands. At the end of the programme, the speakers also had the opportunity to answer some questions raised by the students.

UiTM’s Groundbreaking Initiatives in Renewable Energy: Pioneering Large Scale Solar Photovoltaic Plants for Sustainable Development

UiTM is the only university in the country to own and operate two Large Scale Solar Photovoltaic (LSSPV) plants in Gambang and Pasir Gudang. The Gambang plant, spanning 290 acres and divided into 22 zones, utilises 184,880 polycrystalline Jinko Solar panels to generate over 80,000 MWh annually. This renewable energy powers over 20,000 homes and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by over 66,000 metric tons. Financially, the project is expected to generate significant revenue over its 21-year lifespan. The Pasir Gudang plant, spanning 112 acres, is divided into 10 zones, and uses 94,260 polycrystalline JA Solar panels to generate over 40,000 MWh annually. It supports more than 11,000 homes and significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by over 28,000 metric tons annually. The project is expected to generate RM 220 million in revenue over its 21-year lifespan. These initiatives highlight UiTM’s commitment to SDG 7 by promoting affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy. The project’s significant contribution to clean energy generation demonstrates a scalable model for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting economic stability, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change, and making sure that energy is available to all.

Prototype of Robust Uninterruptible Wireless Power Supply Using Modified Single-Phase Matrix Converter

The research project titled “Prototype of Robust Uninterruptible Wireless Power Supply Using Modified Single-Phase Matrix Converter” aims to develop an advanced wireless power supply system that enhances energy reliability and efficiency. The project focuses on creating a prototype that integrates a modified single-phase matrix converter to provide a robust and uninterrupted wireless power supply. This innovative system addresses the challenges of power outages and energy interruptions by offering a stable, continuous energy source without the need for traditional wired connections. By improving the reliability and efficiency of wireless power transfer, the project contributes to the development of clean energy solutions and supports the transition towards more sustainable energy systems. The prototype is particularly valuable for applications Pix | Rozie Times 1 where consistent power supply is crucial, supporting SDG 7 by promoting technological advancements for affordable, reliable, and clean energy solutions.

Development of Energy Storage Devices for Stationary and E-Mobility Applications

The Micro Industrial Hub project titled “Development of Energy Storage Devices for Stationary and E-Mobility Applications” focuses on advancing energy storage technologies to support both stationary and electric mobility applications. This project aims to create innovative energy storage solutions that enhance the efficiency and sustainability of energy use in various sectors. By developing high-performance storage devices, the project seeks to improve the reliability and availability of renewable energy sources for stationary applications, such as grid storage, as well as for electric vehicles (e-mobility). These advancements are crucial for addressing energy intermittency issues and reducing dependency on fossil fuels, thereby supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems. The project contributes to SDG 7 by fostering the development of technologies that enhance energy storage capabilities, making renewable energy more accessible and efficient, and promoting sustainable practices in both stationary and transportation sectors.

Augmentation on Electron Clouds of Hierarchically Modified D-Block Doped ZnO Nanowires Captured on the RGO Surface for H2 Adsorption Characteristics

The Micro Industrial Hub project titled “Augmentation on Electron Clouds of Hierarchically Modified D-Block Doped ZnO Nanowires Captured on the RGO Surface for H2 Adsorption Characteristics” focuses on enhancing hydrogen adsorption capabilities through advanced nanotechnology. This research aims to improve energy storage and utilisation by developing modified zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires, doped with D-block elements and captured on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surfaces. The project investigates how these modifications impact the electron clouds of ZnO nanowires, enhancing their ability to adsorb hydrogen gas. Efficient hydrogen storage is crucial for the development of clean energy solutions, particularly in fuel cell technologies and hydrogen-powered vehicles. By advancing nanomaterial technology to improve hydrogen adsorption, this project contributes to the broader goal of creating more effective and sustainable energy storage systems. This aligns with SDG 7 by promoting innovative technologies that support clean energy transitions and enhance the efficiency of renewable energy sources.

UiTM Perak Branch Initiates Social Responsibility (USR) Programme on Solar Lighting

UiTM Perak Branch, through its Green Campus Committee and Green Safe Cities (GreSAFE) Research Group, collaborated with Puncak Iskandar residents and the Perak Tengah local council to promote solar lighting technology to enhance neighbourhood safety. The programme, initiated and supported by UiTM Perak technical team, involved 30 academic staff, 15 local council staff, and over 50 community members in installing 12 solar lighting systems in a few houses, amenities, and playgrounds. It has helped to strengthen the safety, security, well-being, and inclusivity of the community toward crime prevention. The programme aligns with the Malaysian Twelfth Plan (2021-2025) and SDG 7 and SDG 11 by synchronising the Malaysian Science, Technology, Innovation, and Economic (MySTIE) plan, specifically Smart Cities and Transportation. UiTM Perak Branch is currently conducting various activities focusing on resilient and safe communities in Malaysia, including crime prevention through environmental design, green environments of safe cities, and resilient cities with green management.

Shah Alam Low Carbon City Action Plan 2035

The Shah Alam Low Carbon City Action Plan 2035, developed by the Solar Research Institute (SRI) under Dr Yusfida Ayu Abdullah, aims to reduce Shah Alam’s greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030. The plan, which aligns with the national low-carbon agenda, includes Strategy 2: Building and Clean Energy, aligning with SDG 7. The initiative is based on national standards and policies, emphasising the need for clean and low-carbon energy to mitigate climate change risks. The plan involves collaboration with building owners and discussions with various parties, including the local city council, universities, businesses, and governmental organisations. Published on 21st October 2021, it marks Shah Alam City Council as the first Malaysian local authority to release a comprehensive low-carbon city action plan in line with the national sustainability agenda.

The First Eco-Tourism Centre In Kampung Orang Asli Uses Solar Panels To Generate Electricity

The Tonggang Orang Asli Village in Ulu Kinta, Perak has become the first eco-tourism centre in the country to receive free electricity supply. The pilot project, a collaboration between Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perak Branch and the Orang Asli Development Department (JAKOA) of Perak and Kedah, was launched on 26th August 2023. The project has been funded by UiTM’s internal grant, the UiTM Research Entity Collaboration Grant (KEPU), through the Green Safe Cities (GreSAFE) research group. The initiative aims to increase security and boost the economy of the indigenous people from the Temiar tribe. A total of 10 solar panels with a power of 10-watt up to 100-watt have been installed at the centre, providing continuous electricity lighting at night. The project also aims to achieve Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 11, which are to achieve affordable clean energy and create a sustainable community.

The “Young Electrical Engineer Challenge & Feasibility Solar” initiative aims to engage and empower young electrical engineers in developing innovative solar energy solutions. This initiative encourages participants to explore and assess the feasibility of advanced solar technologies, focusing on improving efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. By fostering creativity and technical skills among emerging engineers, the challenge supports the development of cutting-edge solar energy solutions that can contribute to a more sustainable and reliable energy system. Participants are tasked with designing practical solar projects that address real-world energy needs, promoting the adoption of renewable energy sources. This initiative not only provides valuable hands-on experience but also contributes to the advancement of clean energy technologies. By inspiring the next generation of engineers to innovate in the field of solar energy, the project plays a crucial role in achieving SDG 7 by enhancing access to affordable and sustainable energy solutions.

In-Campus Green Initiative Digital Application Launch Programme: eGREENi@ Campus

The In-Campus Green Initiative Digital Application Launch Programme: eGREENi@Campus” initiative, part of FKKH UiTM 2023 Sustainability Warrior/Green Marvel programme, was launched on 27th October 2023, at UiTM Perak Branch. The initiative aimed to introduce a database management system for Green Initiative campus projects, provide exposure and skills for accessing green initiative data via the eGREENi@Campus app, and transform the digital culture into a globally visible ‘Smart Campus’. The programme involved the Unit 4 Green Campus team, using ArcGIS, and Survey 123, to introduce the campus community to the app’s features. A ‘Smart Direction in Campus’ system from the UiTM Auxiliary Group Perak coordinated project sites, and a durable labelling system with QR codes provided quick campus information access. The eGREENi@Campus app, launched by scanning QR codes, provided a database of green initiative projects, including Solar Charging Hub, Tapak Kelulut, Musang King Farm, Green Roof, and RWH. Key programme outcomes included creating a regularly updated one-stop access point for green initiative statistics and information, establishing a virtual and digital repository of campus green activity information, and achieving achievement indexes for recycling, paper and plastic reduction, and ‘Campus Cheer’. The eGREENi@Campus application won silver and gold medals at PRIN2023 and INDES2022. This project promoted SDG 7 by digitising green initiative information, promoting sustainability and technological innovation in the university community.

UiTM Low Carbon Challenge (LLC) 2030

UiTM Green Centre (UGC) has implemented many green initiatives since its establishment. UiTM is committed to execute the low carbon cities framework programme focusing on five Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction elements: energy, mobility, waste, water, and greenery and water bodies. UiTM aims to reduce 45% emission intensity by 2030, and is working on a carbon management plan to become Malaysia’s best Low Carbon Public University Model by 2030. Section 1 where the main campus of UiTM is located and five UiTM buildings were the diamond recipients of the Low Carbon Emissions Challenge 2030. They include the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Chancellery building, the Engineering Complex, the Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Surveying, the Faculty of Computer, Mathematics and Sciences, and UiTM Health Centre. The LLC 2030 challenge was a success as there is a gradual increase in the awareness towards green initiatives.

Air-Conditioning Energy Consumption of an Educational Facility and Energy Index: A Case Study in the Engineering Complex of UiTM Shah Alam

The high energy consumption in buildings can potentially be attributed to the use of air conditioning system. Hence, it is necessary to measure and study its energy efficiency to reduce energy consumption in buildings. This paper examines the energy consumption of an educational facility, specifically the Engineering Complex in UiTM Shah Alam, and its Building Energy Index. This study describes user attitudes towards air conditioning usage, the electric energy consumption pattern and the building energy index. The study revealed that the air conditioning system’s operation was unsatisfactory, and the energy consumption can be reduced by improving users’ attitudes and awareness towards air conditioning through awareness and technical improvement
