Empowering Future Entrepreneurs: TikTok Entrepreneurship Workshop at UiTM

The “TikTok Entrepreneurship Workshop” programme at UiTM aims to help students generate income through entrepreneurial activities on campus. The programme, which was attended by 54 participants from the Faculty of Health Sciences, 18 executive committee members from the Occupational Therapy Students’ Association and 2 VIPs, aims to produce optimistic and broad-minded students who are open to running businesses online or in person. The guest speaker, Business Social Media Consultant Muhammad Haziq Bin Rizal, has more than three years of experience in helping entrepreneurs create content on social media to increase sales through TikTok application. The programme was well received, with active comments and two-way communication between participants and guest speakers. The workshop concluded with a photography session in the hope that the insights shared by Mr Haziq can help participants in starting a business

Entrepreneurship Empowerment Carnival: Cultivating Future Business Leaders

Entrepreneurial Carnival 2023, organised by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia in Putrajaya, served as a preliminary testing ground for College of Computing, Informatics and Mathematics (KPPIM) students to assess their entrepreneurial skills. The event focused on promoting the selling points of Sharifah, a brand from SHRF Food, and raising brand awareness. The event aimed to help students develop confidence, communication skills and resilience. The faculty and SHRF Food Sdn Bhd have partnered to expand the market for their ready-to-eat Malaysian cuisines and cooking pastes. The students, especially the members of the entrepreneurship association, were equipped with product knowledge and the corporate background of SHRF Food. The faculty also plans to collaborate with SHRF Food Sdn Bhd in various areas including entrepreneurship, incubators, consultancy, application development and internships.

Faculty of Business and Management is Moving Forward with International Collaborations Through Expert Forum Sharing Session

The Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) emphasises the importance of increased collaboration between academic institutions and industry. The Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) and the College of Creative Arts co-hosted an expert sharing session with Professor Dr Martina Maria Keitsch from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway. This programme provided an engaging and informative session aimed at advancing sustainable studies and exploring a broad range of knowledge.

The event, held at UiTM GESTURZ, aimed to create a platform for dialogue in the field of sustainable design management that goes beyond conventional boundaries by exploring the intricacies of sustainability studies and envisioning a better future for global communities. The event was hosted by the School of Creative Arts under the leadership of Dr Siti Salwa Isa and Mr Abu Ali and jointly organised with the Department of International Business and Management Studies under the initiative of Associate Professor Dr Nor Lelawati Jamaludin from the FBM, supported by students from the Department of Postgraduate Studies FBM and GESTURZ UiTM.

An exciting sharing session with Professor Dr Martina Maria Keitsch from Norway took place, providing a unique opportunity to gain insights and perspectives from her studies and experiences in the field of sustainability. A notable highlight of the event was the group work, where the participants were divided into eight groups. Each group had the task of developing creative ideas that were in line with the chosen sustainable goals and met the social requirements. They also had to come up with innovative designs that offered novel and imaginative solutions that could captivate and appeal to both society and the target audience.

This initiative is helping to create an academic ecosystem that responds to the changing scenario of higher education and promotes innovative pedagogies for resilient education that nurtures the minds of tomorrow. The knowledge shared, connections made and memories created during this event will definitely leave a lasting impression on the participants and inspire them to make further contributions in the field of sustainability management and decision making.

The Impact of Recreational Sports Industry Development on the National Economy Sector

Recreational sports are among Malaysia’s fastest-growing and most profitable industries. However, research studies and statistics on the recreational segment of the country’s sports business remain scarce and insufficient. The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) currently lacks a compelling rationale for formally recognising the sports industry’s contribution to the national economy. This research aims to analyse the influence of recreation on the national economy, focusing on expenditure, revenue, and employment within the recreational sports sector. A survey approach was used, employing a questionnaire based on selected indicators. This study also adopted a mixed method research strategy, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. The information gathered is important for KBS to evaluate the effectiveness of current planning and strategies to promote the national sports industry in a more comprehensive and dynamic way

Human Capital Development for Social Entrepreneurs - Financial Literacy Programme: IPR & BMT Participants of the Ministry of Economy

The Financial Literacy Programme for IPR/BMT participants, also known as the Financial Literacy Programme (FLP-BMT/PR), aims to equip individuals with the financial knowledge and skills necessary to manage their income effectively and enhance their financial well-being. By focusing on financial literacy within the context of IPR/BMT income initiatives, the programme helps participants learn how to optimise their income, reduce debt, and plan for a more secure and sustainable financial future. The programme will be customised to meet the participants’ needs and their current level of financial understanding, with different approaches used based on their financial literacy and business types. The main objectives of this programme are to enhance the financial knowledge of IPR/BMT participants, improve their financial management skills, and support them in planning for a more stable and successful long-term financial future.

Design for Safety (DfS) in Construction : Collaboration for Knowledge Transfer from the UK with Implications for Policy and Practice in Malaysia

The construction industry has long been notorious for its poor occupational safety and health (OSH) performance, accounting for about 30% of worker deaths in Malaysia. Design for Safety (DfS) was identified as a key mechanism for preventing or reducing the risk of accidents and injuries in construction. A project was launched to foster collaboration between The University of Manchester and UiTM on DfS. In the UK, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) had mandated DfS practices since 1995, with recent revisions in 2015. In Malaysia, the Occupational Safety and Health in Construction Industry (Management) (OSHCIM) guidelines, adapted from CDM, were introduced in 2017 and were anticipated to be mandated in the coming years to enhance the existing Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) Act 1994. Lessons learned from the UK were expected to assist in the implementation of OSHCIM guidelines into Malaysian legislation and contribute to building the foundation for DfS research and industry maturity. The collaboration aimed to promote the exchange of research and practitioner expertise on DfS through various scholarly activities. The anticipated impact on Malaysian welfare was twofold: (1) in the short term, raising awareness about the benefits of DfS among stakeholders, which would facilitate the diffusion of OSHCIM in the industry and education; (2) in the long term, yielding economic benefits by reducing losses from injuries and improving social welfare by providing a sustainable OSH environment through upskilling stakeholders. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods, including questionnaires, interviews, and case studies. Initially, a case study was conducted in Malaysia to benchmark the variables involved in adopting DfS practices. During the COVID-19 era, online discussions were held with industry experts, academics, and UK collaborators. Physical meetings and visits to the UK were conducted to expand people-to-people linkages and promote knowledge transfer regarding DfS research and practices from the UK to Malaysia. These visits were intended to enhance capacity and capability building among Malaysian stakeholders.

Basic Workshop on Ceramic Souvenir Production

In an effort to provide students with special educational needs (SED) the opportunity to develop their artistic talents, UiTM Perak Branch, Seri Iskandar Campus, organised an eight-day “Basic Workshop on Ceramic Souvenir Production”. This course, which aimed to open the door to the sustainability of art and creative skills, was very well received by students with special educational needs from schools in Central Perak. A total of 20 students took part in this workshop, which was held over 8 days.

The course was conducted by lecturers and administrative staff of UiTM Perak Branch, Seri Iskandar Campus, who have extensive experience in the field of ceramic arts. During the eight-day intensive course, students learnt the basics of working with clay, the process of clay moulding, the use of colour and glaze and the process of making the final product. During the course, the students received comprehensive and valuable theoretical knowledge and practical training in ceramic art.

The highlight of this course was the exhibition of the students’ works on the 8th day (6th October 2023) at Al Biruni Gallery. Their works, created with a lot of patience and creativity, surprised everyone present. Mr. Mohd Saleh Abdul Wahab, the project leader, said: “I am very happy to see the seriousness of the students and hope that the skills imparted by the facilitators will open the eyes of all participants to engage in the field of ceramics in the future.” This course not only provides opportunity to learn in the field of ceramic art, but also encourages the development of valuable skills, creativity and communication. Athanlis Innovation Sdn Bhd, developed through UiTM’s research, has had a meaningful impact on advancing SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). The company specialises in developing innovative technologies to increase industrial efficiency. In particular, Athanlis has promoted the use of Lindifera and products made from Harum Manis mangoes. Lindifera technology improves agricultural processes, while Harum Manis-based products utilise the unique properties of the mango to create value added products. These innovations contribute to local economic growth by creating new employment opportunities and increasing productivity. Athanlis Innovation’s achievements emphasise the company’s role in promoting sustainable economic development through research-based solutions and technological advancements that drive economic progress in Malaysia and align with global sustainability goals.

Financial Independence Strategy for Community Entrepreneur (FISCENT)

UiTM partnered with the entrepreneurs of Small dan Medium (SMEs) Bukit Subang to support them through a specially developed module entitled “Flying High and Financial Independence Strategy for Community Entrepreneurs (FISCENT)”. The objective of this programme was to provide training and knowledge transfer that focused on digital business and building collaborations with private companies and government agencies to ensure business continuity. Therefore, entrepreneurs need to acquire basic entrepreneurial knowledge to support the smooth operation of the business and avoid delays, especially in the post-pandemic period.

Empowering Local Economy: UiTM Negeri Sembilan, Seremban City Council, and Merchantrade Asia Collaborate on Tourism and Business Growth

UiTM Negeri Sembilan Branch, Seremban City Council (MBS) and Merchantrade Asia Sdn. Bhd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Chancellery Building, UiTM Shah Alam. UiTM was represented by Professor Datuk Ts. Dr Hajah Roziah Mohd Janor, Vice-Chancellor of UiTM, and witnessed by Professor Dr Yamin Yasin, Rector of UiTM Negeri Sembilan Branch (UCNS), while Seremban City Council (MBS) was represented by Dato’ Masri Haji Razali, and Merchantrade Asia Sdn. Bhd. was represented by Mr Ramasamy K Veeran. This MoU will foster excellent linkages by promoting collaboration between universities, organisations and communities.

UiTM Global Strategic Partnership Initiative in Australia

The UiTM delegation visited the offices of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Melbourne and Education Malaysia (EM) Australia to discuss a programme under SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) that focuses on workforce development, economic growth through trade and innovation and collaboration between UiTM and various Malaysian agencies in Australia. The objective of the visit was to gain feedback from the Malaysian Consulate, MIDA, Agriculture Counselor Office (ACO) and MATRADE on the latest developments and current issues. The discussion centred on collaboration strategies that UiTM could explore with MIDA, ACO and MATRADE as trade and investment agencies to generate mutual benefits and contribute to the country’s economic growth, research advancements and skills development. Key areas of collaboration included research and innovation, workforce development, international trade and export assistance, startup hubs and innovation centres, data use and analysis, technology transfer, access to finance, policy development, joint research initiatives, skills sharing, networking and communication, and regional development promotion. Collaboration between UiTM, MATRADE, ACO and MIDA can create synergies that benefit the local economy, promote innovation and help all three institutions achieve their respective goals. By conducting collaborative research on market trends, industry needs and innovation opportunities, UiTM can guide policies and strategies for economic growth.
