AdCare: Share With Love

The Advertising Students’ Association Club, MC244, known as The Adgency, at UiTM Shah Alam, successfully organised a Community Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative called “AdCare: Share With Love”. This initiative was held in partnership with the Pusat Jagaan Cahaya Kasih Bestari orphanage in Kampung Melayu, Subang.

The event received enthusiastic support from the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Studies at UiTM Shah Alam, highlighting a strong sense of community and creating memorable experiences for everyone involved. The activities, filled with the joy of the children and the laughter of the volunteers, left a lasting impact on all participants.

AdCare directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG 10), which aims to reduce inequality within and among countries. By offering enjoyable activities such as DIY Team Building: Puzzle Race and Storytelling: Beyond the Pictures, AdCare helps alleviate the burdens faced by less fortunate children, while promoting their motor skills, soft skills, and creativity.

Additionally, AdCare has positively influenced students’ development, fostering increased empathy, leadership skills, and a heightened sense of social responsibility. The success of the program was supported by generous sponsors, including Modachi Sdn Bhd, Figure Diversified Sdn Bhd, and Dough Re Mi Bakery, who played a crucial role in enhancing the welfare of the children.

UiTM Anti-Poverty Programme

The Students Welfare Management Unit, part of UiTM’s Student Affairs Division, is dedicated to supporting students facing financial difficulties. This support includes various forms of assistance such as reduction or exemptions of tuition fees, living assistance, scholarships, emergency aid, and many more. Specifically, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) offers hostel fee exemption for students from low-income families. This can be referred to in Circular No.5 published in 2021 regarding Hostel Fee Exemption which can be downloaded from https://hep.uitm.ed.my/main/ (under Muat Turun – Pekeliling Timbalan Naib Canselor HEP). This circular clearly states that students from families earning less than RM2,500 per month are eligible for this exemption.

 Empowering Abilities through Sustainable Hydroponics

The Basic Hydroponics Course at Seri Iskandar National Secondary School in Perak was organised by the Department of Built Environment and Technology at UiTM Perak College of Built Environment, Seri Iskandar Campus, in collaboration with the Central Perak District Agricultural Office. This programme, supported by the National Commission of UNESCO Malaysia (SKUM), aims to provide equal opportunities to individuals with disabilities (OKU) by involving them in sustainable development activities. The programme focuses on hydroponic maintenance, environmental conservation, and sustainability, and the benefits of sustainable agriculture. It highlights how hydroponic farming can positively impact ecosystems, socioeconomic conditions, and health. By participating in this programme, individuals with disabilities gain a deeper understanding of hydroponic agriculture. They not only acquire knowledge but also have the chance to become leaders in creating positive changes in their communities. This programme’s goals include reducing educational and agricultural inequalities by providing inclusive and equitable learning experiences. It emphasises skill-building, technical training, and entrepreneurship in sustainable practices. Through these efforts, the programme seeks to level the playing field and support disabled individuals in gaining access to education and sustainable agriculture opportunities.

UiTM’s Research on Enhancing Zakat Distribution for Greater Equity and Social Impact

UiTM researchers are working to improve zakat distribution—an Islamic practice of charitable giving aimed at alleviating poverty and supporting disadvantaged communities. While zakat has historically been vital in aiding Muslim societies, current zakat organisations often struggle with effective fund management and distribution. This project aims to develop a more efficient and transparent system for distributing zakat in Malaysia, ensuring that it reaches those who need it most. Researchers will use interviews, observations, and surveys to create a framework that aligns with both Islamic principles and Malaysia’s development goals. The goal is to make zakat distribution more equitable and effective, thereby supporting Sustainable Development 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by enhancing social equity and ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most.

UiTM’s Research on Tackling Investment Scams to Enhance Financial Fairness

Investment scams deceive people by promising high returns with minimal risk, leading to significant financial losses. These scams surged in Malaysia, with RM98.7 million lost to fraud in 2017 alone, and cyber fraud incidents are on the rise. This research project at UiTM aims to improve the prevention of investment scams. Researchers will investigate current prevention methods, identify factors that make scams successful, and examine the tactics used by scammers. By interviewing experts and analysing existing practices, they will develop a new model to enhance scam prevention. This research supports Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by striving for a fairer financial system and better protection for investors, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and secure financial environment.

UiTM’s Efforts to Enhance Islamic Legal Understanding Among Indigenous Communities

Many indigenous Muslim communities in Malaysia struggle with understanding and practising Islamic law due to social isolation and low literacy rates. These communities require a tailored approach to Islamic jurisprudence that aligns with their unique lifestyles. UiTM is working to create a new model of Islamic legal education called the tafsir jurisprudence model, specifically designed for these indigenous groups. The project begins by identifying the educational needs of these communities. Based on this assessment, a customised model will be created, reflecting their daily experiences and legal needs. The model will then be tested and refined with input from experts and community members to ensure it is effective and relevant. By enhancing Islamic legal literacy in these communities, UiTM’s project supports SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by promoting more equitable access to religious knowledge and resources for marginalised groups. This initiative aims to improve their overall well-being and facilitate their integration into society.

Drone Operation Basic Course – Proficient TVET Work at Perak Children’s Aspiration Centre

The Surveying and Geomatics Science Program at UiTM Perak’s Department of Built Environment and Technology was selected by the Perak Children’s Aspiration Centre (PASAK) to provide specialised drone operation training to youth in Lenggong, Gerik, and Pengkalan Hulu. This five-day, fully funded course, held at Kolej Komuniti Gerik, aimed to enhance participants’ technical skills in drone technology, covering modules on photography, videography, and data processing. Twenty participants attended, engaging in both theoretical and practical exercises. The course culminated in a video competition to assess their learning.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10, which aims to reduce inequality within and among countries, this programme provides equitable access to education and technology, empowering underprivileged youth with skills that can lead to new opportunities and socio-economic mobility. UiTM Special Pre-Higher Education Programme (PPT)

In line with its commitment to community and national development, UiTM offers a special Pre-Higher Education Program (PPT) design to support Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders. This programme aims to strengthen academic foundations at the Pre-Diploma level. Upon successful completion of Pre-Diploma, students are given the opportunity to pursue further studies in a Diploma programme. The progression opens doors for continued education at the Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree and Doctor of Philosophy levels. UiTM’s PPT is guided by the university’s philosophy that excellence is achieved through knowledge transfer and the application of core values.

By 2025, UiTM plans to offer 6,000 new enrolments through this programme. PPL is particularly focused on providing pathways for students from the B40 (low-income) group and indigenous communities, ensuring they have the opportunity to advance to higher levels of education.

Empowering the Elderly: UiTM’s Fall Prevention Program Strengthens Community Bonds

The Jalinan Kasih Bersama Warga Emas Pinang Tunggal, organised by the Physiotherapy Diploma Program of UiTM, Penang Branch, Bertam Campus and Jamik Al-Abidin Mosque, Pinang Tunggal, Penang, aimed to raise awareness about the risks of falls among the elderly. The programme provided 40 Physiotherapy Diploma students with hands-on experience in communication and physiotherapy skills, preparing them to treat elderly patients. Inaugurated by Tuan Haji Bahman Jamaluddin on behalf of Mr. Amir Heberd Abdullah, Assistant Rector of UiTM Penang Branch, Bertam Campus, the programme served 60 elderly participants. Activities included talks on fall prevention, ‘chairobic’ exercises, and 10 screening tests to assess fall risk, physical strength and balance. Additionally, a consultation session with a physiotherapy lecturer offered personalised advice and exercises for each participant. This initiative supports SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by addressing health disparities among the elderly and empowering them to proactively manage their health. It also enhances community development by strengthening ties between the university and local residents, promoting social responsibility, and potentially reducing health risks and healthcare costs for the elderly.

Sowing Seeds of Care: UiTM’s Pineapple Project Empowers Children’s Home for a Sustainable Future

The Faculty of Plantation & Agrotechnology (FPA) at UiTM Pahang Branch, Jengka Campus launched a community service programme titled “We Care Together” in collaboration with Rumah Tunas Harapan (RTH), a family-based children’s home. The programme engaged 20 RTH residents, 14 FPA lecturers, and UPL staff. The programme involved transferring basic knowledge of pineapple plants to the RTH community. Activities included building an area for growing MD2 pineapples to prevent pest issues, and hands-on training in fruit tree pruning, pest and disease control and fertilisation. Additionally, agricultural materials were donated to support these efforts. This initiative highlights FPA’s commitment to community care and social responsibility. UiTM Enhances Access to Medical Services through Government Letter Service (GL) at Al-Sultan Abdullah Hospital

Recent data highlights a significant increase in the use of Government Letters (GL) services at UiTM Al-Sultan Abdullah Hospital over the past three years. In 2021, 12,722 patients used GL services. This number rose to 19,403 in 2022 and reached 25,104 in 2023. Similarly, the number of medical encounters increased from 54,296 in 2021 to 79,763 in 2022 and further to 118,777 in 2023. The total billing for these services also grew substantially, from RM13,459,035.10 in 2021 to RM22,783,589.92 in 2022, and RM32,378,524.47 in 2023.

This upward trend underscores UiTM’s crucial role in supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10, which aims to reduce inequality. The GL service allows government employees, their dependents, and pensioners to access medical treatment without financial strain. By accommodating the growing number of GL patients, UiTM’s Al-Sultan Abdullah Hospital plays a key role in ensuring that government employees, their families, and retirees receive essential medical care, thereby promoting social inclusion and equality.

The increased use of GL at UiTM aligns with SDG 10’s objective of providing equal opportunities and reducing inequality by providing access to essential services, including to disadvantaged groups such as retirees and their dependents. Basic Home Maintenance Course for Indigenous Communities

UiTM Perak Branch’s Department of Built Environment and Technology (JABT) conducted a Basic Home Maintenance Course for the Orang Asli community, in collaboration with the Perak Children’s Aspiration Centre (PASAK) and the Department of Indigenous Development (JAKOA). The course was held at the People’s Hall of Kg Tumboh Hangat and involved ten participants from Kg Tumboh Hangat, Kg Suak Padi, and Kg Gedung Batu. The program aimed to teach essential home maintenance skills, including electrical work, plumbing, and general repairs. It featured eight modules on topics such as building basics, electrical safety, and physical home repairs. Participants took part in both theoretical lessons and practical hands-on training, which included inspecting and repairing the hall’s roof, walls, ceiling and electrical systems, as well repainting the building. The successful repairs and improvements made by the participants not only enhanced the hall’s appearance but also equipped them with practical skills for managing home maintenance independently. The course, supported by UiTM teaching staff, significantly increased the participants’ confidence in performing basic repairs.

Altruism Festival 3.0 2023: Igniting the Spirit of Altruism and Social Responsibility

The “Altruism Festival 3.0 2023” was held at the MBSA Convention Centre in Shah Alam. This event, organised by UiTM Shah Alam Academy of Language Studies (APB) in collaboration with the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), UiTM Disabled Services Unit (UPO), and UiTM Industry, Community, and Alumni Network Office (ICAN), aimed to foster a spirit of altruism and social responsibility.

The festival, which also included UiTM’s Mawar and Teratai Residence Colleges, Al-Sultan Abdullah Hospital, UiTM Health Center, and various NGOs, featured a range of activities designed to support and engage the disabled community. The festival’s theme, “Altruism Sows Awareness of the Inclusive Community of the Existence of the Disabled,” included activities such as Braille chess, painting, and health screenings. Notable events included a forum on disability issues and workshops on Braille and sign language. Participants also enjoyed entertainment from singers Dinie and Khai. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), the festival aimed to enhance social inclusion and community engagement, showcasing products and services while fostering an inclusive society.
